I don't know about you but here in Charleston, our Mexican restaurants are packed with people enjoying a nice refreshing margarita on more than just Cinco De Mayo!

Let's break down who makes some of the best margaritas in town!!

TACO BOY

First on the list has to be Taco Boy. Open since 2009, Taco Boy has been one of the staples of Charleston in the Mexican food scene. With 3 locations, one downtown, one on Folly Beach, and one in Summerville, there are multiple options for you to get your margarita fix in! With 9 different options of margaritas as well as numerous frozen drinks and custom made cocktails there is bound to be a drink for everyone in the crowd to enjoy. Go check them out on Tuesdays when it’s $5 margaritas all day!

Mex 1

Mex 1 Coastal Cantina is named after Mexico 1, the Mexican Federal Highway that runs the length of the Baja California Peninsula from Tijuana all the way down to Cabo San Lucas. The highway is filled with epic surf spots and authentic taco joints.

With 3 locations, this restaurant has plenty of choices for you to come see why it has been voted Best Mexican Restaurant as well as Best Margarita in Charleston. They only use 100% agave tequila and all their margaritas are made with freshly squeezed juices. Mex 1 has an extensive tequila, rum and mezcal selection and also offers a number of house-infused tequilas including: pineapple habanero, strawberry cucumber and jalapeno.

SOL Southwest Kitchen

One of my personal favorites is SOL Southwest Kitchen. They have nearly 70 premium tequila selections for you to choose from. From fine aged tequilas meant for sipping to premium Milagro tequila that you can find in most of their house margaritas, you’ll taste the difference good tequila makes.

They use freshly squeezed citrus juices, homemade sour mix and delicious ingredients to ensure you get the most natural tasting margarita possible! You can check out these incredible drinks at one of their 2 locations in Mount Pleasant and Summerville.

Rancho Lewis

The food and drink menu at Rancho Lewis is a nod to Pitmaster John Lewis’ Texan roots in both El Paso and Austin, which means lots of green chiles. The chiles star in the ever-popular spicy margaritas at this downtown restaurant, and the most unique way to taste these chiles is in the frozen margarita. Fresh Hatch Green Chile juice adds a kick to a margarita on the rocks or the Mexican martini, but the frozen margarita gets its own special treatment. After a little trial and error they ended with a candied green chile jam that adds a hint of sweetness to the drink and compliments it perfectly. Check out these drinks any day of the week, or if you want a great deal, stop by for happy hour from 4 – 6 p.m. Monday through Friday for half-priced drinks and appetizers.

El Pincho Taco

There is no shortage of unique margaritas at this hidden gem downtown on Meeting Street. Between the restaurant’s Pincho Drinks and its new Mexico City Collection, it serves more than 30 varieties of margaritas. What happens if you can’t decide on just one? Don’t worry, you can sample four different margaritas with their margarita flight.

So there you have it! A few of my favorite spots to go find a nice refreshing margarita after a long day in the sun! Don’t forget the chips and queso too!

The Colors That Paint The Lowcountry

Any first time visitor to our city will instantly feel themselves awash in the uniquely Lowcountry color radiating from Charleston’s buildings. This architectural rainbow is so unique in fact, there is actually a commercially available Charleston color palette.

Charleston’s color and design styles are quite literally bottled up, and used by paint, building and design manufacturers for mass consumption, everywhere …not just in Charleston. These colors run deep and definitely represent the culture, physical attributes and social scene, specific to lowcountry living.

We’re gonna talk specifics on 5 hues and colorways that truly encapsulate the historical and modern lifestyles of Charleston proper. And in typical Charleston fashion, each color has with their own story and respective contribution to our Holy City.

Haint Blue
If it’s not Haint, it ain’t…

Take any walking tour around downtown Charleston and we can pretty much guarantee Haint Blue will be a topic of conversation. A lightish, not quite sky and not quite aqua, blue with slight green and white additives that give it its unique composition.

Often seen painted on the ceilings of Charleston’s piazzas, or what you may call front porches, Haint Blue’s origin stems from the Gullah Geechee, an African American ethnic group who’s customs are synonymous and integral to the Lowcountry lifestyle.

Historically, Haint Blue was painted on the exterior of Gullah homes, to keep out evil haunts, or haints in Gullah. In Gullah belief systems, the blue mimics the color of the sky or water, thus confusing would be interloping spirits from entering the home, a bit of after-life vertigo.

But in fact, there may actually be some non-pseudo scientific basis to this ghastly deterrent. Haint Blue has some inherent insect repellent mixed right in. Because blue is on the opposite end of the color spectrum than the warmer reddish tones that attract insects, specifically disease carrying mosquitoes, these pests would be less attracted to houses painted with Haint Blue.

This also had to do with the chemical make-up of how paint was made back in the day. Haint Blue’s lighter, water-esque like color comes from adding some green to the mix. Historically, creating green paint often meant using lime extract. Lime and other citrus flavors are a natural insect repellent, still very much in vogue. Think citronella candles, and those tangy smelling bug sprays we use today!

Seeing as mosquito borne diseases were such an issue for early residents of the city of Charleston, maybe the line between sickness spreading mosquitos and malevolent spirits was rightfully blurred? Either way, to many people, if the Lowcountry was a color, it would definitely be Haint Blue.

Charleston Green
It may shock many to find out Haint AIN’T the ACTUAL official color of Charleston. That actually goes to a color that may not seem like a color at all, but a slightly faded black: Charleston Green.

Charleston Green is a very, VERY dark, green, often seen painted on doors, shutters, or as an exterior accent.

The origins of Charleston Green is attributed to the reconstruction period after the Civil War. As part of the city’s reconstruction efforts, the federal government supplied area builders black paint, as it was the cheapest paint to produce. In true Charlestonian fashion, residents put their own spin on things, and often mixed yellow or greenish pigments into the black paint, along the way developing Charleston’s eponymous shade of green.

Today, this color is seen all over Charleston and often used in lieu of the blacks, specific to the Carolina black and white design style we often see throughout the Southeastern United States.

Verdigris Green
Between hints of Haint Blue and the near black of Charleston Green, sits Verdigris.

And to confuse the whole official color debate even more, from all of our time walking around and taking in the architectural wonders of Charleston, when talking about mere quantity, Verdigris Green might REALLY be the official color of Charleston.

Today, Verdigris Green is a purposely sought after design and colorway. However, it didn’t start that way.

If you are thinking that Verdigris green looks a lot like New York’s Statue of Liberty, then you would definitely be onto something. And as some of you may have heard, the Statue of Liberty was not originally green but Cooper, and that’s exactly how Charleston’ Verdigris Green came to be as well.

Many paints prior and up to the 20th century contained copper as a sought after paint texture and it was mixed into right into pigment. As the copper infused paint oxidized over time, it turned green. Something that was not initially intended.

Today, in many places, like the Statue of Liberty, this is an unwanted byproduct we have come to accept in almost an antique like reverence. Charlestonians, however, have truly leaned into this unique, greenish shade and it is now a sought after banner color for many plans and designs.

In terms of shades, pantones or Hex codes, Verdigris Green can be a bit harder to nail down, but generally speaking, it’s slightly tealish, much heavier on the green than blue, and almost acts as a visual testament to Charleston’s coastal and Caribbean infused style.

Bermuda Pink
Speaking of Charleston’s Caribbean roots, Bermuda, or Creole, Pink is another common color seen on Charleston homes and buildings. According to Benjamin Moore, Bermuda Pink is a " washed out shade that still contains a hint of pink."

Famously seen on Rainbow Row or The Pink House, one of Charleston's oldest buildings, one could definitely make a case for Bermuda Pink to be the official color of Charleston too. I think we may have a true color scandal on our hands.

Unlike the others we’ve mentioned so far, Bermuda Pink is not generally used as an accent color, but often as a base color for an entire building.

Charleston, and the Lowcountry as a whole, does not contain rocks with limestone, the precursor to concrete. By importing Bermuda stone from the Caribbean, brick building materials could be made easily, especially with the support of the criminally free labor of Charleston’s historically large slave population.

Bermuda Stone is naturally very light in color, thus allowing such light hues, like Bermuda Pink, to maintain it’s longevity. Today, this material is not sourced, so many of the buildings have been that color, or maintained with that color, for a very long time.

Sang De Boef
Sang De Boef, french for Oxblood for you non francophiles, is a seemingly direct contrast to our previous 4 colors. A deep, burgundy-like red to brown shade that is seen as both a base color and accent color on doors, window shutters and roofs all over Charleston.

Many Italianate or terra-cotta styles will use this, or a gradient version of this color, as an intentional design giving it an intentional washed out or weathered look.

Evoking a combined Mediterranean and colonial essence, that also checks some historically French architectural guidelines, Sang De Boef is a melting pot of style fit for Charleston.

Stories have been passed down that the original paints and pigments actually contained cow or ox blood to give it its deep red tone. That hasn’t been confirmed but there is no doubt the color is definitely accurate for the common name.

Sang De Boef has definitely seen a modern revival. Its flexibility to work within many architectural designs as well as its neutrality and matching abilities with some of Charleston’s brighter color palates make it a very common base color seen around the holy city.

The colorful city of Charleston can’t be broadstroked into just 5 colors but there's definitely a historical pathway when it comes to determining Charleston’s architectural rainbow, how it came to be and how ir inspired architecture around the world.

Uncovering the Architectural Gem of the Charleston Single House

We can’t talk about Charleston’s unique architecture, without starting with Charleston’s most storied, recognizable, architectural namesake: The Charleston Single House.

Built on the characteristically narrow city lots of the Holy City, the Charleston Single House is always built deeper then it is wide… at least from a street view perspective.

An often heard Charleston myth proclaims homes were built this way as a loophole for property tax prices that were based on rooms visible from the street, but that’s not exactly true. When South Carolina was still a British colony, strict urban planning rules were established by parliament back in London for all land development in the emerging cities of British North America.

Many of the homes built in Charleston from the early 1700s to the 1890s would have, at least at the time, been a Charleston Single House . That’s a pretty wide architectural epoch. While there isn’t an exact historical date, builder or architect credited to the invention of the Charleston Single House style, when you see one, you’ll know it.

One major clue to the design origins can be found in the Caribbean island of Barbados. Back in the 1700s, Charleston represented the southernmost border of the British colonies in North America. Many of Charleston’s first inhabitants were actually immigrants twice over; leaving Barbados (then also under British rule) and once again resettling in the new, promised lands of soon-to-be South Carolina.

They brought over the tried and true residential house styles from the coastal settlements of Barbados. A residential building style that was based more around function, than style, in the pounding heat and storm susceptible climate of the tropics.

These homes were often built with business and social needs at the forefront as well. Back then, the home was not just a place to lay your head but also a place to sell your goods and services, often while playing host to lavish parties filled with men in wigs and women in dresses so big they could be used as drapes in those large great rooms.

You may also notice that most brick Charleston Single Houses are directly adjacent to each other or feature a brick or stone wall right on or flush to an obvious property line. This is not just to keep nosy neighbors out but, in fact, is a leftover of one of America’s first official fire prevention building codes. Early on, Charleston was devastated by a number of fires and these backwalls were established to act as a fire break from one property to another.

These days, when it comes to form and style, the Charleston Single House can be quite ambiguous in its aesthetic design. Today, you will often see Charleston Single family homes styled in NeoGothic, Greek Revival, Italianate, Victorian, Federal and even modern flavors.

But while loose with design or architectural form in modern times, when it comes to being a true Charleston Single House there are some strict functional rules in both exterior and interior layout. In classic form, it is one room wide with 2 rooms to each floor and a centrally located staircase with ascending floors layered the exact same way.

All feature a columned piazza, or front porch, on the south or west side of the house. This layout allows the home to take advantage of the prevailing winds and maximize sun exposure in relation to Charleston’s geographical location which was a lot more important before the invention of electricity and central air-conditioning, but definitely still has its benefits today.

In modern Charleston, one family and multi-family dwellings, and even storefronts, have kept the Charleston Single House style going strong. Its seamless outdoor/indoor living architectural concept has been lauded and used as a design feature all over the world.

Charleston is such a unique and storied city with a visual style not seen anywhere quite like it. As city with both historical and modern architectural wonders, there is no doubt the Charleston Single House was the start of Charleston finding its one-of-a-kind, architectural stride.

With a city as awesome and desirable as Charleston, South Carolina, sometimes it’s easy to forget that even the best places to live and visit, always have a ‘flipside.’ And as many locals will tell you, with Charleston, that flipside is the summer heat!

Charleston lies deep in what’s known as the subtropical zone. And while it might not be quite Florida, June through August can make it feel like the polar opposite of a Holy City.

So whether Charleston is home base, or you’re just popping in for a summer escape, here are Lively Charleston’s top 5 ways to beat that holy heat this summer.

THE BEACHES
As a coastal city, one of Charleston’s greatest allures is its proximity to literal, world-class beach destinations along South Carolina’s coast. Charleston proper features 5 beautiful beach towns:

Kiawah Island

Each destination brings its own unique pace and personality, but whatever your particular vibe, South Carolina summers are always more bearable by the water. Traffic can get a little hairy, especially during the summer, so we suggest getting your day started early. While we can’t get behind spending your entire Charleston existence inside, if you have to beat the heat with some indoor refuge, Charleston’s storied museum mile along Meeting Street, will definitely keep you covered….and cool.

With 6 museums and 5 nationally registered historic houses, you’ll only have to step outside for mere minutes, before you find your way into your next stop.

If you have kids, It might seem like a hard sell… at first… but I promise they will never forget a day spent at Children’s Museum of the LowCountry. And parents will love the free admission for anyone under 12. But sorry mom and dad, we can’t help you once you pass the gift shop.

THE SOUTH CAROLINA AQUARIUM

Who needs a zoo when you have a world class aquarium?

The South Carolina Aquarium is an AZA accredited facility, located right on the Charleston Harbor. It features almost 7,000 aquatic animals and gives you an up close and personal experience with the plethora of native wildlife and environments found in South Carolina.

The aquarium often features rotating exhibits from more exotic places. Kids and adults alike will have a blast at the touch tank, and be sure to say ‘ What’s Up?’ to our friend, Liberty, an American Bald Eagle who was rescued from Florida, and now lives the luxurious life, as the matriarch of the aquarium.

SHEM CREEK
Shem Creek is a direct tributary, right where the Cooper River widens into the Charleston Harbor. Shem Creek is also a direct tributary to a good time!

It's technically part of Mt. Pleasant, the suburb to the immediate east of ‘ the Peninsula.' And w hile it lacks an official zip code, it is one of the most picturesque and best eating locales in the area. When it comes to a summer’s night out in Charleston, there might not be a cooler place than Shem Creek.

Shem Creek was originally a major hub for the shrimping and fishing industry, and we’ve yet to have or hear about a bad seafood dish. To start, why not check out Saltwater Cowboys , one of Lively Charleston’s favorite places for great seafood. For all of the land food lovers in your crew, they also have great Carolina BBQ and specialty cocktails and beers on tap.

HUSK

Our first stop is at Husk, located in the heart of downtown Charleston. This restaurant is famous for its Southern cuisine and locally sourced ingredients. The menu changes daily, based on what's available at the farmers' market, so you're always in for a unique dining experience. We recommend trying their crispy fried chicken or their shrimp and grits for a taste of classic Lowcountry cooking.

XIAO BAO BISCUIT

Last but not least, we have Xiao Bao Biscuit, a restaurant that offers a unique fusion of Asian and Southern flavors. Don't let the name fool you, as their menu goes far beyond just biscuits. Their okonomiyaki, a savory Japanese pancake, is a crowd favorite, as is their Korean fried chicken sandwich. Be sure to wash it all down with one of their creative cocktails or a cold beer.

The Haunted History of Charleston

Charleston, South Carolina is well-known for many things – its large sprawling moss-covered oak trees, its beautifully preserved colonial homes and churches, the incredible southern food and seafood spots, and some of the most photogenic locations in the south – just to name a few. Charleston is also known to be one of America’s most historic cities with a rich history that dates back three centuries. It is a city shaped almost entirely by its past; a past that has demonstrated its ability to build beauty from ashes, time and again, proving the indomitable spirit of its people.

Founded in 1670 by English settlers, and originally named Charles Towne, the coastal city quickly became a busy seaport and central hub for commerce, with most of its trade in rice, indigo, and cotton. It was also a major slave trading port – almost half of all slaves transported to America arrived at the Port of Charleston. While this active seaport created a flourishing economy for the city and its residents, it also brought with it many misfortunes, dangers, and diseases. In addition, Charleston played a significant role in both the Revolutionary and Civil wars.

With all that has taken place here in Charleston over the past three centuries, it has no doubt left an indelible mark on the city; one that can still be felt today. Largely, the imprint left is the legacy itself and how that has shaped the Charleston of today, but also, the echo of the pain and suffering felt throughout its history that is present in the countless ghost stories and tales of encounters with souls lost in time.

Here are 5 historically significant locations in Charleston that are also rumored by locals to be haunted by the memories of its past:

PINK HOUSE

History: Built in the 17th century, the Pink House is one of the oldest existing structures in Charleston. While many of the city’s original buildings have been destroyed over the years, the Pink House has survived two wars, countless hurricanes and catastrophic fires, and two major earthquakes. Originally used as a tavern and brothel, the Pink House was popular with boozing sailors and hustling pirates traveling to the port. It would later serve as an art gallery and then a law firm during the 20th century.

Spooky story: Over the years, there have been many rumors of ghostly encounters inside the Pink House, and the alley that runs along the building is also said to be a hotbed of paranormal activity. One of the most commonly reported sightings is of a female apparition walking up and down the stairs and hallways. Some believe this to be the spirit of the infamous pirate, Anne Bonny. Other visitors have claimed seeing windows opening and closing violently and sensing someone breathing on, and even touching, them.

Legacy: Today, the Pink House is privately owned and in the process of being repaired and converted into a single-family home. However, if you walk down the cobblestones to where it stands on Chalmers Street, it almost feels – for a moment – like stepping back in time. Even amongst its colonial-style neighbors, the Pink House stands out as a striking testament to the three hundred years of history that has taken place in that very spot.

OLD CHARLESTON JAIL

History: The Old Charleston Jail, known to locals as the Old City Jail, is both a site of historical significance as well as a unique and impressive piece of architecture with its Romanesque Revival details. According to Bulldog Tours, before the jail was constructed on the one block parcel reserved for public use, the land was used for almost one hundred years as a place to bury the dead of all those who could not afford a churchyard burial. This included the poor, new immigrants that didn’t establish a church affiliation, criminals, and at that time, both free and enslaved people of color.

It served as the Charleston County Jail from 1802-1939, having held jailed high-seas pirates awaiting hanging, as well as Union officer prisoners-of-war during the Civil War. It was also known to have housed some of Charleston’s most infamous criminals, such as 19th century free black pastor Denmark Vesey who was convicted of planning a major slave revolt and later hanged; in addition to high-profile inmates John and Lavinia Fisher, outlaws and members of a large gang of highwaymen who were convicted of robbery and murder and subsequently executed for their crimes. The jail was decommissioned in 1939 and has, for the most part, remained vacant in the years since.

Spooky story: The jail was used for walking tours beginning in 2003 and has since gained notoriety as an attraction for ghost tours. It has even been featured in several television shows, including Travel Channel and Ghost Hunters. The jail was eventually decommissioned after over 100 years in use, primarily because it was too expensive for the government to make the necessary changes to bring it up to what was considered humane standards for a jail in the 1930s. It was considered one of the most inhumane jails in the country at that time, with prisoners having no access to electricity, running water, or indoor plumbing. Overcrowding of the jail was so prevalent that it was often listed as the cause of death for many who died within its walls. It is rumored that the jail is haunted by many of those who perished while incarcerated there, and several reports of being physically grabbed and scratched during ghost tours. Also, having been hanged outside the jail, Lavinia Fisher is said to haunt the grounds as well, with tourists claiming to have seen her apparition.

Legacy: After decades of poor maintenance and care, the Old City Jail was a large historic structure on the verge of collapse when it was purchased by a local development firm in 2016. Today, the jail is undergoing a $15,000,000 historic renovation project, with plans to rehabilitate and convert the jail into a multi-tenant office building, while maintaining and preserving the building’s original character. According to Bulldog Tours, once the project is complete, the owners plan to allow public access to the space for continued historical tours and ghost tours. While it may look different, its historical significance will remain as a reminder and monument to the city's lost voices from a darker time.

UNITARIAN CHURCH CEMETERY

History: Built in 1772, the Unitarian Church in Charleston is the oldest Unitarian church in the south and the second oldest church building in the city of Charleston. It was originally built as a second meeting house for the Independent Church in Charleston. However, it wasn’t used as a church until after the Revolutionary War; during which time it was used at different points as a barracks for both British and American forces.

Spooky story: The most famous ghost stories associated with the Unitarian Church Cemetery is the tale of Edgar Allan Poe’s ill fated lover who he wrote about in one of his most famous poems, “Annabel Lee.” The story goes that they had a forbidden love, and due to a broken heart, she became ill and died. She was buried in the cemetery in an unmarked grave. Many believe that she can be seen roaming the graveyard at night as the “Lady in White,” searching for her long-lost love.

Legacy: Like many of the church cemeteries and graveyards around the Holy City, the Unitarian Church cemetery is a beautiful sanctuary set apart from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets just outside it. What makes this churchyard stand out from the others is its overgrown and seemingly neglected appearance, with dense shrubs and trees crowding the spaces between and around the gravestones, and vines growing wild and twisted all around the cemetery. It stands as a symbol for life after death. Time has stopped on life over and over for those buried on the grounds, but new life continues to grow and thrive around it. It is a hauntingly beautiful representation of the city itself – beauty from ashes.

WHITE POINT GARDEN

History: White Point Garden, also known as Battery Park, is a landmark defensive seawall and promenade. Its name is derived from the oyster shells bleached white by the sun that covered the waterfront land when colonists first arrived on the shores; originally known as “Oyster Point'' and then “White Point,” it was given its current name when it officially became a public park in the 1800’s. The area was also a place of historical significance during the wars, with a defensive seawall that was lined with cannons in order to protect the city from invasion. In the years after the Civil War, statues and monuments were erected to honor the darker periods of the park’s history, in addition to a number of military relics.

Spooky story: It is said that pirates convicted of crimes were publicly hanged in the center of the park, including infamous “Gentleman Pirate” Stede Bonnet and his crew. Over the years, visitors of White Point Garden have reported seeing faces staring at them through the dark as well as apparitions that appear to be hanging from the trees.

Legacy: The historic waterfront park is an impressive attraction to visitors and residents alike, with its incredible views of the harbor and South Battery Street lined with grand historic mansions, and a large shaded grassy area under a canopy of old, massive oak trees. On any given day in the park, you can find tourists strolling down the pathways and looking at all of the many monuments and statues, locals walking their dogs or on a daily run through the park, or even a wedding at the gazebo in the center of the park. Though the ground you walk on today has felt the footsteps of war, it remains intact for life to continue moving over it; and though the ancient oaks cannot hide the sins of their past, they have grown larger and stronger, digging their roots deeper into the earth, creating a stronger hold in the ground on which they stand.

OLD EXCHANGE & PROVOST DUNGEON

History: Before the combined Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon that stands today was erected – and prior to the Old Charleston Jail being built – the Provost Dungeon held imprisoned pirates until their execution, including Stede Bonnet and his crew. When it was finally built in 1771, the Old Exchange originally served as a custom house, public market and meeting place. During the Revolutionary War, British forces used it as a barracks and its basement was used to hold prisoners-of-war. According to the museum website, in 1791 city leaders entertained George Washington at the Exchange during his tour of the south. In the years between the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, the Exchange was Charleston’s most common location for public slave auctions, making it one of most significant sites for domestic slave trade. In the years after, it has served as a post office, city hall, and currently a museum.

Spooky story: According to Ghost City Tours, down in the dungeon in particular, visitors have reported encounters with dark entities. People have claimed hearing terrifying screams and moans, seeing dancing orbs, and feeling as though invisible hands are wrapped around their throat. Up in the light of the Exchange on the upper floors, the reports are of much less malevolent spirits, with sightings of disappearing staff members in Revolutionary-era attire.

Legacy: The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1973. Today, it is a non-profit historic site that focuses on the American Revolution and colonial Charleston – more importantly, it is one of Charleston’s most historic sites, and one where you might find yourself experiencing the city’s dark past first-hand when you visit.

Whether you are a Charleston local or a visitor, it is virtually impossible to walk the streets of Historic Charleston and not feel the influence of its extensive history wherever you go. Famed artist and Charleston native Elizabeth O’Neill Verner is quoted to have once said, “It is impossible for me to enter Charleston from any side, whether by land or by sea, and not feel that here the land is precious; here is a place worth keeping…” The restaurants, shops, offices, parks, museums, graveyards, and homes – everything here has a story to tell. And if you’re paying close attention, you might just get it.

Jack of Cups Saloon | Folly Beach

Fourth on our list is Folly Beach's Jack of Cups Saloon. They're all about creating unexpected, globally-inspired comfort dishes, often inspired by Asian and Indian flavors. Charleston Magazine says that it's a haven for vegetarians, vegans and omnivores alike. With sidewalk booths and a sunny back courtyard, Jack of Cups is proof that a world of extraordinary flavors can exist in small places. Enjoy Americana sliders made with plant-based patties or teriyaki cashew toast topped with fresh herbs. Just steps away from the beach, grab your meal to-go with a hibiscus tea margarita and make your way to the sands.

Neon Tiger | Downtown Charleston

Last but definitely not least, is downtown Charleston's Neon Tiger. Founded by animal rights activist John Adamson, Neon Tiger is a cocktail bar focused on local, organic, sophisticated libations and small plates. His inspiration to open the restaurant was sparked by the current species extinction crisis and how animal agriculture plays a big role. Adamson focuses on recreating those flavors and satisfactions that many people look for in meat. He said that once people are here, customers will usually try the pepperoni pizza and they have no idea they're eating plants rather than pork. Lastly, before you leave the restaurant, make sure to grab a slice of their vegan chocolate cake topped with buttercream frosting served with warm cocoa fondue and fresh berries.

When Selling Real Estate Off-Market Benefits Both The Buyer & Seller

I wanted to give you an example of a situation where it's better to sell a property off-market. Take my current listing that's under contract for example...

There's three interesting aspects about this home. There's actually two different units, but it's not permitted as a duplex. So I wouldn't be able to list it on the MLS as such. But it does have a mother-in-law suite with two separate driveways.

The second aspect is that there's tenants in place for a few months to come and just makes the transaction a little bit more sticky.

The third aspect is this property is located in what I like to call an opportunity zone right in between downtown and Park Circle. So you've still got developing apartments and breweries half a mile away, but 100 yards down the street there's a strip club, so it might not be the best place for a family.

With those three aspects in mind, It was most efficient to leverage my relationship with investors willing to pay a premium for off market income producing properties in order to not compete against everyone on the MLS.

It really was a win-win situation because he got an income producing property and my client got a premium for his property without disrupting the tenants. This situation displays that some transactions call for critical thinking and quiet execution.

1. Mace Brown Museum

First stop on our list is the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History at the College of Charleston. A public natural history museum located on the college campus, this museum is home to over 15,000 fossils from around the globe, including species native to the Carolinas.

Not only is the museum a great place to visit for anyone with a budding interest in archaeology or the past, it also supports the internationally respected research occurring at the school. Of course, it’s free to visit, and donations are welcome.

3. The Ravenel Bridge

So maybe spooky graveyards and fossils aren’t your thing. In that case, we recommend a stroll along the Ravenel Bridge. With construction starting in 2001 and completed in 2005, this cable-stayed bridge is the third largest in the western hemisphere, spanning 1,546 feet.

With walking and biking lanes, a trek across this marvel of engineering will offer breathtaking views of the Charleston harbor and downtown. Of course, snapping a few pictures from the banks of waterfront park or Patriots Point isn’t a bad idea either.

4. The Charleston Battery

To further enjoy the beautiful weather, a walk along The Battery is a great way to spend an afternoon in the sun. This landmark defensive seawall aptly named for the cannon batteries entrenched here during the Civil War is famously flanked by massive antebellum homes.

With views reaching out to Charleston Harbor, Castle Pinckney, and Fort Sumter, it’s perfect for a panorama look around the peninsula. A walk through White Point Gardens is an added bonus for a leisurely stroll underneath the trees.

5. The Angel Oak

Speaking of trees, last on our list is one of the oldest living things in the country, the Angel Oak. Estimated to be 400-500 years old, the Angel Oak stands over sixty feet tall, and measures roughly 28 feet in circumference, with the longest branch measuring 187 feet long.

An absolute must-see for anyone visiting Charleston, we recommend bringing some food, and setting up a picnic in this iconic location on Johns Island.

1. R Kitchen

Heaven for any foodie, this intimate experience isn’t replicated anywhere else in town. This reservation only establishment features a five course dining experience with a new menu created every morning by the chefs.

Kitchen-side tabletops and bar top seating means you are face-to-face with the craftsmen behind the counter as they reveal their meal to you at the start of your course and walk you through each dish and their inspiration behind its creation.

With two locations, on the Peninsula and West Ashley, this is a unique restaurant experience you don’t want to skip.

2. Muse

Nestled on Society Street, you’re likely to walk right past this place if you don’t keep your nose up. Blending in with the rest of the historic homes on this block, Muse offers a cozy, romantic dining experience.

With porch-side seating and indoor dining, you can’t go wrong with either option in this dimly lit setting. Dive into delicious Italian dishes such as their Chef’s special bruschetta, Veal Scallopini, and the extensive wine menu.

3. The Royal American

Coming in third on our list is our pick for some nightlife action, The Royal American on Morrison Drive. A neighborhood bar and restaurant with an aesthetic resembling rustbelt Americana, you won’t be disappointed if you wander in here on a Saturday night.

Local artists and bands rock out on a small stage at the center of the venue. Their energy can be felt in every corner of this establishment.

One oddly interesting feature of this joint is the lights hanging from the ceiling. Don’t be surprised if a rowdy crowd starts swinging them back and forth as the rest of the stage lighting makes this venue come to life.

4. The Commodore

Joining our run of nightlife bars is The Commodore. A vintage jazz club hailing from the 1980's, the Commodore boasts “Good Vibes, Live Music, and a Touch of Class.” As a staple in the jazz circuit, indicated by the timeless photos on the wall, the club still hosts jazz and funk acts from across the country.

With live music five nights a week, local and regional acts are regularly scheduled. And who knows, on occasion, you may get a surprise performance by national acts dropping by to belt it out in this historic venue.

5. Tempest

Coming in to round out our list is Tempest! This one sits slightly outside our “hidden gem” criteria since it was voted Best New Restaurant in the Country by USA Today in 2020.

Tempest is a destination offering seasonal, locally sourced seafood delicacies & a robust wine list. Hyper-local South Atlantic Seafood makes up the majority of this restaurant's menu, including chilled and charcoal roasted options.

To cap off the night, a rosé for the ladies and a cigar and cognac for the men are their dessert staples to conclude the evening.

Considering investing in a short term rental property or even long term rentals? Being a prime tourist destination coupled with 44% of the households in Charleston being renter-occupied, it’s a no-brainer that the Holy City is a place to consider when looking to invest.

Here are 5 mistakes to avoid when investing in Charleston real estate.

1. Confusing turnkey with new.

Something often overlooked is the semantics between “turnkey” and a property that is “new”. Turnkey simply means that the property is working, and ready for marketing to renters. It means everything is functional, not necessarily new.

There is a big difference between a 15 year old hot water heater, and a brand new one.

While a new investment property might not need much in terms of maintenance for several years, a turnkey property will likely see those maintenance bills pop up sooner. You’ll want to be sure to set aside cash every month so you aren’t caught unprepared when these expenses come due.

2. Skipping the home inspection.

This doesn’t just go for investment properties. We recommend an inspection to all potential buyers across the real estate spectrum. A home inspector will tell you everything you need to know about the condition of the property before it becomes yours.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, factor in these potential costs into your budget, AND… make sure work with your realtor to see what deferred maintenance you can get the seller to pay for.

3. Underestimating expenses.

Once a property becomes yours, those numbers turn from hypothetical, to real. There are costs associated with general upkeep for things like the yard & pest control… as well as bigger ticket items like appliance repairs, HVAC service, and roof-related items.

The best advice is to make a list of all of the monthly costs associated with running and maintaining a house (based upon estimates) before actually making an offer on one. Once those numbers are added up, you can calculate your Return on Investment after subtracting these costs.

4. Failing to build a support team before you make the purchase.

Oftentimes people will try to do all repair work and property management themselves to save on costs. Although this can work in the short term, in the long term this often takes away from personal time, family time, or time that could be spent working on your other business.

Building relationships and having a go-to list of people in skilled positions, such as a general contractor, plumber, or electrician will help you play the long game as your investment properties age.

Your support team is your boots on the ground. Screen them and build trust and rapport with them. The day will come when you need to rely on their judgment because you aren’t there to handle an issue yourself.

5. Neglecting your renters.

Now, let’s fast forward a bit and let’s say you have purchased a property and have your first renters. You may become inundated with after-hours calls, and responding to renter requests can be tedious and exhausting. Successful investors and landlords respect tenants with a professional attitude, and don’t let emotions get in the way.

Easier said than done, but renters likely will not renew their lease if they feel neglected. Improving and maximizing renter retention is the best way to ensure your property is generating income. We all know empty properties don’t make money, and unhappy renters won’t stay put for absentee landlords. If you feel yourself getting behind on requests and upkeep, or the general happiness of your tenants is slipping... consider hiring a property manager to your team to help balance or run all of the above.

Believe it or not, the holiday season is here, and if you’re new to Charleston, you may be wondering what there is to do to celebrate. While South Carolina may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of a white Christmas, I assure you what we lack in snow, we sure make up for in spirit.

1. The Festival of Lights at James Island County Park

First up, we have the Festival of Lights at James Island County Park. A staple for 32 years, this event is one of the most popular attractions this time of year. A three-mile driving tour featuring dazzling displays, the name itself doesn’t even explain it all. The festival also totes an impressive sculpture made up of over 50 tons of sand — a “very Charleston” substitute for ice — and even includes a holiday train.

A walk through the enchanted trail is sure to set the mood, or even a ride on the Victorian carousel. To round out the night, some marshmallow roasting and hot chocolate makes this experience a one-stop-shop if you’re looking for a quick trip to get into the holiday spirit.

2. The Holiday Boat Parade

Perhaps you weren’t sold on the sand sculptures and carousels, and are looking for an even more unique way to experience the lights and displays with an ocean-side-vibe. If so, then the Holiday Boat Parade is the experience for you.

A Lowcountry tradition, this family-friendly event features glowing, festive boats sailing from the Cooper River, through Charleston Harbor into the Ashley River. If you’re looking to jump into the action, you can even join the parade with your own boat. If you have a bit of tinsel and lights, of course.

Otherwise, catch the parade from the many great viewing areas like The Battery or the Waterfront Park Pier. Charleston is rich in history, and we’re lucky enough to have some of these 18th and 19th century homes still in existence.

3. Nathaniel Russell House Candlelight Tours

The Candlelight tour of the Nathaniel Russell House is our pick for third. Built in 1808 and located at 51 Meeting St, the furnishings inside the Nathaniel Russell house are 99% original to the time period, including drapery by the same craftsmen who furnished curtains for George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

A romantic, evening tour through this mansion of a property will make you appreciate the challenges before modern lighting, while marveling at the beauty of the holiday decor adorning the interior.

4. Tree Lighting at Marion Square

Next up, we take a visit to Marion Square for the lighting of the Official Christmas Tree for the City of Charleston. The ceremony kicks off with musical acts and artists from all around the city, including a performance of some holiday classics by the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, culminating in the lighting of the 64-foot tree in the middle of historic Marion Square.

5. New Year's Eve at The South Carolina Aquarium
Part of the holiday season means saying goodbye to the previous year, and welcoming the next. We have a wonderful way to do just that. The Annual NYE Grand Ball at the South Carolina Aquarium is the perfect excuse to dress up, and ring in the New Year in an incredible spot.

Held in the Great Ocean Room, this black tie optional event features a DJ, an open bar, heavy hors d'oeuvres, and a champagne toast at midnight making it a truly memorable experience in a location that is oddly appropriate for this ocean-front city.That about wraps it up for our top five holiday festivities in Charleston.

1. Liberty Cottages at Park West

Number one on my list is Liberty Cottages at Park West in Mount Pleasant. This luxurious, gated community is the only age-restricted community of the 20 neighborhoods that make up the larger Park West master plan, and offers all the conveniences and amenities of an individual town. The neighborhood has everything including spacious floor plans designed for independent first-floor living and all exterior home maintenance and yard work is taken care of so residents will have plenty of time to enjoy life. Even basic interior maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs and smoke alarm batteries, is included. The Park West subdivision also offers boat storage, a bank, a veterinarian, fitness facilities, dentist office, urgent care doctor office, a hair salon, and plenty of dining options. There are five single-family floor plans available that range in size from 2,746 to 3,148 square feet and all homes come with screened-in porches, granite counter tops, hardwood floors, 10-foot ceilings, 42 inch cabinets, crown molding, and black or stainless appliances. These brick front homes feature cement boards on the sides, generator hook up, hurricane shutters on some windows, and single or double garages.

Next on our list is Del Webb at Nexton and Dell Webb at Cane Bay, both located in Summerville. These 2 communities are practically neighbors connected by the new Nexton Parkway that starts in Nexton and ends in Cane Bay. Within the private gates of Active Adult Community Del Webb Charleston, residents enjoy resort amenities like indoor and outdoor pools, pickleball and tennis courts, a state-of-the-art fitness center, plus clubs and hobby groups. Del Webb also includes a fiber network that provides fast, reliable Internet needed in homes now and in the future. Choose from plans with innovative bonuses, like a laundry room next to the Owner’s suite, that will make everyday chores easier. Or, opt for a plan with an open concept layout that allows for ample natural light and seamless entertaining flow. You all have heard of the popular Waterfront Park, Hampton Park, and Battery Bark... but did you know that the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission operates over 11,000 acres of historic Charleston landmarks, beach parks, campgrounds, boat landings, and more? Well, park yourself right here as I explore our top six Charleston County park attractions.

One of the best ways to enjoy Charleston and its scenery is time spent at a local park. You don't have to venture far to find an ideal park pit stop as Charleston's best parks are close by in Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, James Island, and, of course, on the beaches.

1. Palmetto Islands County Park

First on the list is Mount Pleasant's Palmetto Islands County Park. Located just behind Longpoint subdivision and Boone Hall, you'll be welcomed by 943 acres of tropical greenery and marshfront amenities situated along Horlbeck Creek off the Wando River. Take a stroll down the Osprey Trail, a one-mile loop around the woodlands with some scenic stops along the way and views the marsh, creeks for kayaking, and breathtaking boardwalks, like the bridge where you can stop for a peaceful moment, listen to the soundscapes of the woodlands, and watch a family of turtles swim by.

Palmetto Islands is dog friendly with an off-leash dog park where dogs of all sizes can exercise and socialize. A trip to Palmetto Islands with the family is hours of fun from the Big Toy play park with a zone for kids of every age, sandpit, and the crowd-pleasing 50-foot Observation Tower. Climb up to the top of this wooden fortress for the best views of the park and intercoastal waterway, then take the fun way down on one of the slides. From May to September, stay cool all summer with a thrilling waterpark, and complete your day with a dive-in movie night featuring a family-friendly movie every Friday night all summer long.

2. James Island County Park

Next up is James Island County Park. Best known for the Festival of Lights, a treasured Lowcountry holiday tradition where you can admire millions of twinkling lights right from your car, visit Santa's Village, and make your own s'mores. For the other 11 months out of the year, this 643-acre park offers one of the most favorite dog parks in town with a multi-acre waterfront wonderland, including spacious grassy fields, a beach, a large lake and woods all within an enclosed safe space for a paw-some good time.

Leave your furry friends at home for a day of fun in the sun. James Island County Park is home to Splash Zone Waterpark. Keep the whole family busy all day long with multiple waterslides, a spray play fountain to cool off after a picnic or an afternoon at the bustling play park. The fun doesn't stop there. Rent paddle boats and kayaks and take a climb up the ambitious 50-foot rock wall, spend the night at the full-service campgrounds with 124 campsites, or take a scenic run or bike on the trails under the mossy oaks.

3. Wannamaker Park

Moving up to North Charleston, Wannamaker Park is the largest of all the Charleston County parks, extending over 1,000 acres of beautiful woodlands and a variety of outdoor activities, including two and a half miles of running and biking trails, a dog park, volleyball courts, two playgrounds, and one big play hill, which is an enchantment to see in the Lowcountry. If you overhear the excitement over the Big Kahuna, the Riptide Run, Rollin' River, and the Tubular Twister, you are in for a splashing good time. From riding the tides or relaxing on the lazy river, there's fun for all ages around every corner in the 15-acre Whirlin' Waters Adventure Park, the coolest place to beat the heat in the summer.

4. The Beaches

Without question, the most iconic spots and popular vacation destinations in Charleston are the beaches. Beach parking, concessions, and fun are made easy with convenient county parks at the beach. Folly Beach County Park, Isle of Palms County Park, and Kiawah Beachwalker County Park all boast 2,500 feet of ocean frontage and are accessible to amenities like private parking, dressing areas, outdoor showers, restrooms, picnic areas, and snack bars. Boogie board and surfboard rentals are also available for those who want to take advantage of some of the best surfing on the East Coast.

5. Johns Island County Park

Next on the list is Johns Island County Park. This county park is a little more country. This 738-acre park offers the perfect land for equestrians, where you can find 20 miles of casual rider-friendly trails and it serves as a host site for competitive horse shows at Mullet Hall Equestrian Center. Other outdoor activities on site include a six-target archery range and disc golf.

6. Mt. Pleasant Pier Park

Rounding out our top six parks brings us back over the Ravenel Bridge to the Mt. Pleasant Pier Park. Part of the Memorial Waterfront Park complex, the 1,250-foot long Mount Pleasant Pier stretches out into Charleston Harbor under the Ravenel Bridge and is a favorite spot for catching the best fish. Grab a souvenir or an ice cream at the gift shop and schedule a play date at the fenced-in play park, which is conveniently shaded by the Ravenel Bridge and features structures that mirror the familiar sites of the area, like boats, bridges, and dolphins.

If you're visiting Charleston, any of the parks are just a few dollars for full-day access. But if you're a resident of Charleston County for a one-time annual fee of $75, you get all VIP treatment of free parking and all the amenities the parks have to offer. We consider this a must-have if you live in the Charleston area.

Which Bars & Restaurants In Charleston Have The Best Happy Hour? Part 1

Happy Hour here in Charleston is a treasured tradition loved by everyone. It is near impossible to walk into a bar that isn’t buzzing with laughter, smiles, and a cold drink.

Welcome to part 1 of our top 5 Happy Hours! Today we're taking you through our top 5 picks in Mt. Pleasant, Isle of Palms, and Sullivan’s Island. For our first round-up, we only felt that it be fitting to have you follow along to our favorite bars that you could find us at any afternoon of the week.

Shelter Kitchen + Bar

Our first stop, Shelter Kitchen + Bar. We chose Shelter because of the true beach bar feel, staff, and happy hour prices. Bring your dog on over to Shelter for free treats while you enjoy a nice cold drink. Shelter offers Bud Light draft for $2.25, domestic bottles for $1.75, Woodbridge house wine (red or white) for $2.50, well drinks for $2.25, and buy one get one half off appetizers from 4-7pm Monday through Friday.

Red's Ice House

Next stop, Red's Ice House. You know we are suckers for Shem Creek and you can’t blame us! The views and the atmosphere are like no other place in the world. To get the absolute best view of the creek, head on up to the top of Red's and hang out in the Birds Nest. Catch an awesome happy hour here Monday through Friday from 4-7pm for $3.50 well drinks, $4.50 wines, and $2.75 domestic beers.

Cabana Bar

To top off our favorite happy hour spots on Shem Creek, we saved the best for last! Head over to the Cabana Bar at Water's Edge for happy hour specials you can’t resist. Enjoy the laid back vibe and mingle with locals on the deck while enjoying $1.75 domestic beers, $2.75 well liquor drinks, or a $4.00 glass of wine! These awesome happy hour deals are offered 4-7pm Monday through Friday!

Mex 1

Next is our favorite happy hour on Sullivan’s Island, Mex 1! After catching some rays on the beach, head on over to this coastal cantina and grab a $5 margarita, $3 Mexican drafts, or a $2 Mexican ashtray! Pair it with their amazing queso that is offered for just $4. You don’t want to miss out on these amazing happy hour specials!

The Dinghy

Last one list is the Dinghy on Isle of Palms. My favorite spot to have a nice game of corn hole. They are the only place in Charleston that you can find $2.50 Natty Light on draft. The Dinghy is the ultimate seaside dive bar loved by locals and tourists alike. They offer $3.75 domestic beers, $5.75 house liquors and $1 off most drafts, not including Natty. Oh, and the Philly cheesesteak is to die for!

Everything You Need To Know About The Golf Courses in Mt. Pleasant

When people hear Charleston, SC they think of many things...from great food to historic downtown buildings to beautiful beaches. But one of my favorite things about living here is the number of incredible golf courses that I have the opportunity to play! Today I'm going to take you to each of the courses located just over the Ravenel Bridge in Mt Pleasant.

Snee Farm Country Club

Located in the heart of Mt Pleasant on the beautiful, 200 year old Snee Farm Plantation, this is the only fully private golf club in Mt Pleasant. This club is home to a 6,800 yard, par 72 course designed by George Cobb that offers multiple holes with picturesque marsh views. It also provides golfers with a full driving range, short game practice area complete with multiple bunkers, as well as a chipping and putting green.

Rivertowne Country Club

Located off Highway 41 in South Mount Pleasant, Rivertowne Country Club is home to Charleston’s only Arnold Palmer Signature golf course. This semi-private club is situated among scenic marshlands with 13 holes along the Wando River and Horlbeck Creek. The 18-hole championship course measures nearly 7,200 yards from the back tees making it the longest course in Mt Pleasant. Awarded 4.5 stars by Golf Digest, RiverTowne has hosted LPGA tournaments and was named Charleston Golf Course of the Year in 2015.

Dunes West Golf Club

Right across Highway 41 from Rivertowne Country Club is Dunes West Golf Club. Nationally acclaimed by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest as a “Top 10 Resort Course”, Dunes West’s championship golf course designed by Arthur Hills takes full advantage of its spectacular Lowcountry setting. This semi-private, par 72 course plays 6,871 yards from the tips, but has tees starting at 5,100 welcoming players of all handicaps. The opening holes have generous landing areas and beautiful green settings complete with the undulation and bunkering that are the Arthur Hills signature. The back nine features some beautiful marsh and water views finishing at the 18th hole’s challenging finish on a dual green split by the marshes of Wagner Creek.

Charleston National Golf Club

Located right off Highway 17 in Mt Pleasant, Charleston National is a semi private course that was uniquely designed by Rees Jones. Carved along the intracoastal waterway, it takes you through natural wetlands, lagoons and through a pine and oak tree forest. The result is a championship caliber golf course with some of the best views on the southeastern coast. A par 72 course that stretches just under 7,100 yards from the tips it will give even scratch golfers a challenge from the first tee all the way to the 18th green.

Patriots Point Links

A South Carolina tradition since 1979, Patriots Point Links is a public course designed by William Byrd, located right on the Charleston Harbor. It provides you with incredible views of Fort Sumter, Shem Creek, the Ravenel Bridge and the historic downtown skyline. Giving players the option of four sets of tees ranging from 5,100 to 7,000 yards, players of all skill levels can enjoy playing this par 72 links style course. It is also home to the perennially awarded “Best Par-3 in the Lowcountry” 17th hole, an island green that overlooks the Charleston Harbor. This is a golf hole that will not be forgotten! The ever-changing wind that typically sweeps across the harbor can make the course play take on a completely different perspective from one round to the next.

I’m here with my boys Boomer and Taco and we’re going to introduce you to one of my many favorite things about Charleston - how pet-friendly the whole city is! So grab your beloved furbaby and join us on a tour of our top 5 places to take your dog in Charleston!

1. The Barrel

First on the list is The Barrell, located on James Island right off of Folly Road. The Barrel of Charleston is a bar for you and your dog! What an incredible concept, right?! It’s a friendly bar with a beautiful "backyard" for your best friend to roam, run around, play fetch, or chill out in a shady spot. The entire facility is gated with open access to the Secessionville Creek. They've also provided a separated fenced area for dogs that might need some alone time or a chance to chill out after meeting new friends all day. And for you, they have 33 craft beers on tap, often have food trucks on-site and live music a few times a week! So if you like beer and dogs, definitely check out The Barrell.

2. Charleston Sports Pub

Second on our list is Charleston Sports Pub located in Mt. Pleasant right near Towne Centre. From the outside it looks like your typical sports bar in a strip mall, but once you enter you’re greeted by smiles and open arms! It’s the type of place where when the bartender sees you in the parking lot they start pouring your beverage before you even enter the pub! But the reason why it’s on our list today is because they actually have a menu for dogs! It’s called the Sports Pub Pup Menu and it's only served on their back patio. Menu items include shredded chicken, bacon strips, scrambled eggs and even a beef burger patty – all between $2-$5 dollars. They will also bring your pup a bowl full of ice water to wash down that delicious treat! Whether you are 2-legged or 4-legged, you will always feel like family at Charleston Sports Pub!

3. Festivals

Third to make our list are the many pet festivals our beloved Charleston has to offer! There are so many to choose from like Pet Fest, which is typically held in the Spring on James Island, and includes activities like dog washing stations, pet adoption, a dog parade, and owner/pet look-alike and best dog costume contests. There’s also a family dog show, demonstrations, live music and so much more! We also have Woofstock in Hanahan and is typically held in October. This is a dog friendly outdoor concert with food and drink vendors and benefits local rescues and shelters. Another pet friendly festival is Fido Fest in Mt. pleasant – usually held in April with proceeds going to the Charleston Animal Society. This event includes mini-training sessions, activities, games, food and drinks. So if your dogs like to socialize as much as mine do, be sure to check out the many pet centric festivals in and around Charleston.

4. Waterfront Park

If you’re heading up East Battery you won’t be able to miss the Hazel Parker Playground. Here, you’ll find a fenced off-leash dog run and Waterfront Park. This award-winning, 12-acre park stretches for a half mile and serves as downtown Charleston’s front yard. Whether you’re looking for a spot to play frisbee, a shady corner to curl up with a book, or a rambunctious splash in the fountain, Waterfront Park has you and your dog covered.

5. Beaches

And lastly, we can’t forget our beaches! If your dog is anything like Boomer and Taco, they absolutely love running after seagulls and eating waves! Every beach including Sullivans Island, Isle of Palms and Folly Beach allow our furbabies to enjoy the ocean and sand as much as we do! There are restrictions as to when dogs are allowed on the beaches either leashed or off leash so be sure to check the beaches own municipality website for all the rules and regulations! And don’t forget to get your dog permit if you plan on bringing them with you on your day of fun in the sun!

Exploring Charleston's Historic Battery

People visit Charleston from all over the world for not only its beauty, but it’s endless history! The Old Exchange, the Charleston Market, the cobblestone roads, and the beautiful architecture are just a few of the most sought out pieces of history that still exist here in Charleston. However, there is one that stands out the most… the Battery!

Now I’m not talking about an ancient triple A or double A battery… I’m talking about the peninsula of Charleston that was used for coastal defense artillery, such as cannons and mortars, during the Civil War. The Peninsula is bordered by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, which meet to form the Charleston Harbor.

The Battery goes back all the way to 1731 when Broughton’s Battery (which later became known as Fort Wilkins in 1812) was constructed in the park area now known as White Point Garden.

Even after Broughton’s Battery was demolished in 1789 and a new wall and promenade were completed in the 1820’s, locals still referred to it as “The Battery.” In 1837, the city set aside seven acres at the foot of King Street for the public park known as White Point Gardens. It was named this in reference to the piles of bleached oyster shells on the point of the peninsula prior to the construction of the seawall. From the outset, the park was planned as a place to be enjoyed by all people from all walks of life, not only for the wealthy who resided in the mansions overlooking its green spaces.

However, in 1861, the White Point Garden became a place for artillery during the American Civil War, known as Battery Ramsay.

After the Civil War came to an end in 1865, the park and seawall went back to its former use as a promenade enjoyed by everyone. The historic seawall now benefits locals and tourists by forming a picturesque promenade that offers views that need to be seen to be believed. Numerous monuments have been erected to honor our military and several cannons still remain to remind us of the history and brave soldiers.

Also still standing today are the numerous grand mansions that are simply impossible to miss on the East Battery. The majority of these jaw-dropping homes were built during the peaceful period of 1820 to 1860 and still display stately pillars, dreamy balconies, and unique architecture.

One of the earliest mansions was the Regency-style Edmonston-Alston House at 21 East Battery. It was built in 1817 and is still open today as a museum house operated by the Historic Charleston Foundation. The yellow-stuccoed Louis B. DeSaussure mansion at 1 East Battery was built in 1958. And received a number of hits by Union shells during the Civil War, and one is allegedly still lodged in an attic beam. The yellow brick mansion at 19 East Battery is the newest, built in 1920, and is said to be one of the most expensive homes ever built in Charleston. During World War II, the mansion was used as offices by the U.S. Navy.

Over the years, the Battery has been hit by hurricanes and raging tropical storms. But thankfully, our city has done a tremendous job of maintaining and rebuilding the wall as needed to continue giving locals and tourists the history filled experience it so greatly promises.

Today, the Battery is cherished by romantics, photographers, history lovers, runners, and families alike. I highly recommend that the next time you are in Charleston, you block off a few hours to take a break from the city noise and enjoy a peaceful walk down the promenade or read a book in the park. To make this deal even sweeter, dogs are MORE than welcomed!

The Battery really is a magical experience and something that any visitors to Charleston should make sure they add to their list.

Charleston, South Carolina... paradise on earth. Does that sound familiar? Follow along as we share the top 10 film scenes you can visit from Netflix's teen drama Outer Banks. Warning! Spoilers ahead.

On April 15, 2020, Netflix released a new TV show called Outer Banks that stole the hearts of many young and old, and made our quarantine days a little better. Although the show is set in Outer Banks, North Carolina, the show was actually filmed right here in the Lowcountry.

1. Kildare County Sheriff's Station

Number one on our list is the Kildare County Sheriff's Station. This is really a condominium building located at 218 Venning Street in the Old Village of Mount Pleasant. A quick visit to this utterly charming neighborhood is a must, and don't forget to pop in to Pitt Street Pharmacy's Soda Fountain just across the street for a milkshake and grilled cheese sandwich.

2. St. Paul's Lutheran Church

St. Paul's Lutheran Church is also located in the Old Village neighborhood in Mount Pleasant. Right before Sheriff Peterkin gets killed, she meets with Lana, Scooter's widow, at this quaint little beauty. Located at 604 Pitt Street, you can burn off that milkshake and grilled cheese with a short walk to it after visiting the sheriff's station.

3. The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort is the venue for the Kooks-only Midsummer Night's Gala. A visit to this golf course is truly a first-class affair.

4. Lowndes Grove Plantation

Lowndes Grove Plantation serves as the Tanneyhill Plantation in the show. It's the home of Sarah Cameron and her family. In real life, the estate is a wedding and event venue first built in 1786 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

5. Shem Creek

You've all heard about this one before. If you're watching any scene involving the Pogues on a boat, chances are good you'll catch a glimpse of the quaint waterside boardwalk called Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant. It's an excellent spot to catch some rays while watching shrimping boats float in and out of the harbor. While there, you could also catch a bite to eat at Kiara's family restaurant called The Wreck which, simply enough, is actually called The Wreck in real life.

6. Ben Silver on King Street

Need a makeover? There's no better place to transform a Pogue to a Kook than the shops on King Street in Downtown Charleston. Ben Silver, located at 149 King Street, is where Sarah Cameron takes John B for his much-needed makeover before they infiltrate the UNC Chapel Hill law library.

7. Charleston Gaillard Center

The stunning Gaillard Center played the role of the UNC Chapel Hill Law Library, which Sarah and John B visited. The Gaillard Center regularly hosts a number of notable artists, performers, scholars, and more.

8. Morris Island Lighthouse

Lighthouses are a staple in any coastal town, and Charleston has plenty. Folly Beach's Morris Island Lighthouse makes a few appearances in Netflix's Outer Banks as the Redfield Lighthouse. This lighthouse can be seen in the first episode of the show, which is when many Charleston locals discovered that the show was filmed in our backyard.

9. Palmetto Islands County Park

The Hawk's Nest Tower, where John B falls in the fifth episode, is the Palmetto Park Island Observation Tower. Palmetto Islands Park is a public county park where you can go and explore the area and climb up the Hawk's Nest Tower yourself. The view from the tower isn't too shabby either.

10. Old Bethel AME Church

One of the swoon-worthy scenes that fans love is when John B takes Sarah to his secret place. Old Bethel AME Church is located in McClellanville, approximately 45 minutes by car from Charleston and no longer has a physical address. This abandoned Civil War-era church is a must-see for the avid fans of Outer Banks.

Charleston is the home to a wealth of unique history and experiences. Today we're going to explore five things you can only do while visiting Charleston.

1. The Ravenel Bridge

Are you looking for a good place to walk or run? Head over to the Ravenel Bridge. This bridge is essential to the Charleston skyline. It's named after Congressman Arthur Ravenel, Jr., who helped raise the money to accomplish this project. Completed in 2005, the bridge connects historic Downtown Charleston to the town of Mount Pleasant. The walking path that crosses over the bridge is two and a half miles long. Atop the center of the bridge, you'll be able to get amazing panoramic views of the Charleston Harbor, USS Yorktown, Mount Pleasant, and downtown. If you're lucky, you will be able to see one of the massive container ships passing underneath.

2. Patriot's Point

If you're into history, then you have to stop by Patriot's Point Naval and Maritime Museum. Right over the bridge from downtown Charleston towards Mount Pleasant, it's known to be one of the most spectacular military museums in America. You'll be able to actually step foot onto the USS Yorktown, a World War II aircraft carrier, and walk the steps of war heroes.

3. Downtown Carriage Tour

A unique experience you don't want to miss while visiting Charleston is a downtown carriage tour. Step up into a horse-drawn carriage and explore the downtown city streets. Carriage tours are offered all year, morning to night, covering around 30 blocks of Charleston's historic, tourist-friendly, colorful streets. If you're up for it, you can even take the haunted horse-drawn tour. During the haunted tour a guide will share the many ghost stories of downtown Charleston.

4. Pitt Street

Once the location of a bridge called the Cove Inlet that connected Mount Pleasant to Sullivan's Island, you will now find Pitt Street, a site for relaxation, views, and recreation. Bring a fishing rod and cast a line on the fishing pier and possibly catch yourself some dinner. The first shots were fired here at Fort Sumter, at the mouth of the Charleston Harbor. Experience the history of the opening battle of the American Civil War and explore the origins with a park ranger tour guide. Ferries to Fort Sumter depart from both Patriot's Point in Mount Pleasant and Liberty Square downtown.

What is The Best Time of Year to Visit Charleston, SC?

People often ask me, when is the best time to visit Charleston? And to me, that's a no brainer. So let's talk about what the best time of year to take a trip to the Lowcountry.

Charleston absolutely comes to life during the spring and early summer. Boats come and go from the docks, everyone is out walking their dogs or riding their bikes, outdoor bars and restaurants flood with customers enjoying a cold drink, the sun shines brighter and the water gets warmer, sand castles and sunburns are forming on the beach, local farmers set up produce tables and every single person has a smile on their face.

This time of year you can expect the weather to range anywhere from low sixties to high eighties with sunshine and a slight breeze. However, be prepared for an unpredicted thunderstorm. But don't worry, they typically come and go within an hour or so.

Some of my personal favorite activities this time of year are happy hours on the Creek (c heck out Margaret's post on Shem Creek), exploring Pitt Street ( check out my other post for more info ) and hopping on a friend's boat for an afternoon cruise, a suntan, and maybe even a few cold drinks.

It's also a great time of year to check out the Historic Charleston Market Downtown as majority of the market is outdoors, but don't forget to do some shopping on King Street too. The heat and humidity aren't nearly as harsh as late summer and fall, so the only sweating you'll be doing is trying to carrying all those shopping bags. Don't forget to check out some rooftop bars like the Vendue or the Citrus Club to see some amazing sunset views over downtown and the Charleston Harbor.

If shopping and drinks aren't your thing, or you're looking for something a little bit different, then head on over to one of our amazing beaches. Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island and Folly Beach are all very enjoyable and you should have no problems soaking in that beloved vitamin D. But don't let the comfortable temperature fool, you, you can still get sun burnt so be sure to reapply that sunscreen.

You truly can't go wrong with visiting Charleston anytime of the year, but I will argue all day long that spring and early summer is the best time. What's your favorite time?

Part Two: Guide to Mount Pleasant, SC's Best Waterfront Neighborhoods

Mt. Pleasant is located just over the Ravenel Bridge, bordering the Charleston Harbor and multiple tidal creeks and marshes. Just past the Isle of Palms Connector you enter North Mt. Pleasant, which offers many growing communities and amenities just like South Mt. Pleasant. So whether you’re looking for views with salty breezes or to park your boat on deep water, Mt. Pleasant has the neighborhood for you!

1. Oyster Point

Located just past the Isle of Palms connector you'll will find Oyster Point, one of the most highly desirable new construction communities from D.R. Horton. If you’re looking to stay close to South Mt. Pleasant, this neighborhood provides a 20 minute commute to downtown, 2 minutes to Mt. Pleasant’s town centre shopping and just 4 miles to Isle of Palms beach. This neighborhood is going to be the least expensive waterfront community in the area because it doesn't have a pool or other amenities and it's location next to the highway which can be a nuisance. But that means low HOA fees, backyard views like these and your own personal dock on select sites, I would be willing to compromise!

Horlbeck Creek also offers a neighborhood dock for crabbing and launching your kayak, so overall, if you are looking for an active waterfront lifestyle, this community is calling your name!

4. Rivertowne & Dunes West

Continue down Highway 41 and you'll find Rivertowne Country Club and Dunes West. This pair of communities, located on opposite sides of of Highway 41, both offer well renowned premier Charleston golf courses and waterfront lifestyles.

Rivertowne offers approximately 10 subsections that provide a mix of scenic views including natural lakes, wetlands, marshfront and golf course views. Some of the premier properties have direct access to the Wando River in the Waterfront Park subsection. All residents get to enjoy the fishing and crab docks, community pool, spacious open green space and parks, and optional Rivertowne Golf Club membership!

Across the street, Dunes West is one of the areas only gated communities offering a variety of homes with marsh views, golf course views and deep water access. 6. Darrell Creek

5 Things You May Not Know About Charleston

Churches, forts, plantations, museums, historic homes, historic ships, fabulous restaurants, beautiful beaches... all these and much more come together to make Charleston, South Carolina one of America's premier destinations. Follow along as I share five things you may not know about our special city.

1. Dock Street Theatre

First up is Charleston's Dock Street Theatre. Dock Street Theatre isn't like any other theater, it's the first theater built in America. People have been going to the theater for almost 300 years to watch performances of musicals, plays, and chamber music. Built in 1736, it opened with the performance of The Recruiting Officer, which was the first play in America. Flora, the first opera performance in America, also took place at the Dock Street Theatre.

The original Dock Street Theatre was probably destroyed by the Great Fire of 1740, which destroyed many of the buildings in Charleston's French Quarter. In 1809, the Planters Hotel was built on this site. And in 1835, the wrought iron balcony and sandstone columns were added. A number of notable persons worked and patronized the Planters Hotel, including the noted 19th-century actor, Junius Brutus Booth, father of Edwin and John Wilkes Booth.

Robert Smalls, an African-American Civil War hero, who stole a steamboat in the Harbor and sailed it out past the Confederate-held Fort Sumter and turned it over to the blockading Union fleet, actually served as a waiter in the hotel's dining room prior to the war. After the Civil War, the Planters Hotel was torn down due to it not being properly maintained. In 1937, after $350,000 in renovation costs, the new historic Dock Street Theater, now known as it is today, opened up once more and hasn't looked back.

2. The Ashley and Cooper Rivers

Number two on the list are the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. The two rivers, which border Charleston's historic central district, are named after the same man, Anthony Ashley Cooper. Formerly known as the first Earl of Shaftesbury, he's credited with picking Charleston's location, just west of where it's currently situated, and establishing a progressive development plan for the town along with his assistant John Locke.

3. The Significance of the Pineapple

If you take a five-minute stroll around Charleston, you'll do well if you can make it a few feet without spotting a decorative carving or sculpture of a sweet and tasty fruit. Next up on our list is the significance of the pineapple. To understand that we have to travel back to its origins. It's said that on his second voyage to the colonies, Christopher Columbus discovered the pineapple. He then returned to Europe with a sample of the fruit. Sweets were uncommon and a luxury few could afford. King Charles II posed for an official portrait with a pineapple, which was meant to display his wealth and prominence.

Southern legend tells the tales of sea captains coming home from their voyages and setting a pineapple at the gate of their home, which would signify to all neighbors that he had returned from sea and was welcoming guests into his home. Through the customs and legends above, the pineapple became a symbol of hospitality and friendship. On your next journey to Charleston, take a stroll down the historic streets and count how many pineapples you can find. The one thing you can count on when you're in Charleston is that you'll truly experience Southern hospitality at its best.

4. Golf

One of the greatest games ever played. While many know South Carolina is home to some of the best golf courses, many do not know that Charleston is home to the very first golf club in the country. In 1786, the South Carolina Golf Club was founded in Charleston, and thus, American golf was born. The club, formed by a group of Scottish merchants, started shortly after the first golf clubs and balls arrived to the states. It is often said that the merchants played their first round of golf in Charleston at a public park known as Harleston Green. Announcements of the club were made in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia Almanacs in 1788, letting potential members know to meet at Harleston Green. While it didn't take off quite like it did in other countries at first, golf eventually became a sport loved by many. The South Carolina Golf Club evolved into what is now the Country Club of Charleston. The course has rich tournament history.

5. Familiar Faces

Last, but definitely not least, head over to Joe Riley Stadium and catch a RiverDogs game. You may see a very familiar face walking around. While he's not on the set of a new film, Bill Murray can be found all over Charleston. While deemed Director of Fun for the RiverDogs, he is also part owner of the restaurants, Harold's Cabin and Rutledge Cab Co. Murray has been known to pop up at engagement photo shoots and college parties around town.

But let's not stop there, Charleston has another very well-known celebrity in town. You may know him as the lead singer of the famous band Hootie and the Blowfish, or just as successfully known individually as Darius Rucker. This American singer and songwriter can be spotted often around town and is known to randomly play secret shows at the Isle of Palms Windjammer. If you're ever in the area, pop in and grab a drink and some food, sit on the back deck and enjoy the oceanfront views. Who knows, you might get lucky and catch a free concert from the man himself.

There's no shortage of eye candy here in Charleston! Let's talk about the five things to see while you're visiting this beautiful, sunny city.

1. Shem Creek

Number one on my list is my personal favorite, Shem Creek. Shem Creek is known to be the number one picturesque waterway in the Lowcountry area. It's one of the most popular unloading areas for the shrimp boats here in Charleston. Take a stroll down the boardwalk or sit down for a meal at one of the many restaurants or bars. Want to have a bit of an adventure? Hop on a boat, rent a paddle board or a kayak and head out to the creek. Keep your eye on the waterway as I bet you'll see some dolphins. 2. Boneyard Beach

Hop on a boat and head to Boneyard Beach. Boneyard Beach is located on Bulls Island. This beach gives you the perfect idea of how erosion is affecting our coastal geography. Here at Boneyard Beach you can see where the ocean has breached the dunes and has overtaken the maritime forest. This resulted in an unnatural view of bare trees. It's the perfect place for photography and exploration as the water moves into low tide.

3. The Angel Oak

Angel Oak is one of the oldest living oak trees on the east side of the Mississippi River. The estimated age of this tree is between 400 and over 1,000 years old. This awe inspiring oak is located on Johns Island and is over 66 feet tall with sprawling roots and branches. Take some food and a blanket for a picnic or head over there to take the perfect picture. Wondering how the tree got its name? There are a few stories out there, but the one I love the most is that the sprawling limbs resemble angel wings.

4. Boone Hall Plantation

The next must see in Charleston is Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens. Are you a lover of The Notebook? This one's for you. 30 minutes from downtown Charleston lies Boone Hall. Boone Hall was the backdrop for Nick Cassavetes' The Notebook. This historic landmark gives you a look into the bleak past of America. Hop up into a tractor and get a tour to learn some history. Boone Hall is worth visiting for the Avenue Of The Oaks entranceway alone.

5. The Old Exchange

Last but not least is The Old Exchange. The Old Exchange was used during the 18th century for civic functions, inclusing a public market, public meeting place, and, the coolest part, a jail. The history of this building comes alive with guides dressed in colonial style. They give you a history the pirates, patriots, and presidents of the time. This location held pirates in the 1690s when they were captured out in the Charleston Harbor. This building is filled with history and stories and is an absolute not miss for sure.

Sailing to number two on the list is strolling around Mount Pleasant's Patriot's Point. Patriot's Point is a naval and maritime museum most famous for having the 10th aircraft carrier ever to serve in the United States Navy, the USS Yorktown. You can get lost for hours climbing through the decks of the ship and viewing a number of other exhibits, which include the United States Medal of Honor Museum, the USS Clamagore submarine, and many more.

Floating in at number three is experiencing one of the many ghost tours around the Charleston area. Despite having our very own local Ghostbuster, Charleston remains one of the top haunted cities in the nation. Tiptoeing through the Holy City's darkest dungeons and cemeteries to stumbling through a haunted pub crawl, there are endless options for a frightfully good time.

4. Cypress Gardens

Next is my personal favorite and number four on the list, Cypress Gardens. After a short drive out of the city you can arrive at this beautiful garden, which has featured many Hollywood blockbusters such as the Notebook and The Patriot. Canoeing within feet of alligators in the swamp garden, enjoying the vibrant colors of the butterfly house, and strolling through the aquarium are just some of the many ways visitors can find themselves lost in the beauty of this destination.

5. Carriage Ride

After gaining a few pounds on a food tour, losing it all walking up and down the USS Yorktown, and testing your courage in the dungeons of the Holy City, it's finally time to relax after a long day with number five on our list: enjoying a relaxing carriage ride through the beautiful streets of downtown Charleston. Even as a local, experiencing a carriage ride reminds you how unique and charming Chucktown truly is. Kick your feet up, relax, and maybe even learn a thing or two.

Here in the Lowcountry, brunch is a MUST on Saturday’s and Sundays. Whether you're grabbing a bite before heading out on the water, hanging out all day to watch Football, or having a good ole fashion “Sunday Funday” my top 5 picks will surely do the trick!

1. Page's Okra Grill

First on my list is the famous Page's Okra Grill in Mount Pleasant right past Shem Creek. Page's has a wide variety of hearty breakfast foods and several signature dishes that are sure to please everyone! Page's is known for their shrimp and grits and award winning bloody marys! My personal favorite is the country fried steak and eggs! Now fair warning, because of it’s popularity, you may experience a wait. But no worries, Page's has a great outdoor bar with live music so you can sip on one of their delicious bloody marys and get your groove on while you wait!

2. The Shelter Kitchen and Bar

Next stop is where you are likely to find me on any Saturday or Sunday; The Shelter Kitchen and Bar. You may remember me bragging about Shelter in the happy hour episode and you get to hear more about it today! Shelter has a delicious brunch menu with fantastic drink deals! Get a carafe of mimosa for just $9 or build your own bloody mary starting at $5! With several TVs, live music, corn hole, and a shaded deck, Shelter is the place to be!

Another favorite of mine is Mex 1 Coastal Cantina on Sullivan's Island. Mex 1 just started offering brunch a few months ago, and I have to say, they nailed it! With options ranging from tacos and burritos to french toast, there is zero doubt that you won’t find something delicious! I would personally recommend the burrito covered in queso! The Mex 1 bar staff also went above and beyond creating mouth-watering brunch drinks! Not on Sullivan's Island? No worries, you can also check out their Mount Pleasant or West Ashley locations for the same great brunch and atmosphere!

4. Acme Lowcountry Kitchen

If you’re trying to get to the beach on Isle of Palms early to snag a parking spot but still need to get some grub, then check out Acme Lowcountry Kitchen. Offering omelets, egg benedicts, grit bowls, traditional brunch, and fried seafood, you will certainly have plenty of options to choose from while sitting inside or on their covered patio! They have plenty of delicious variations of blood marys to choose from as well! I suggest trying the bacon vodka one!

5. The Co-Op

Last on the list for today is for you Frosé lovers… The Co-Op on Sullivan's Island. Serving gourmet sandwiches, breakfast, $1 coffee, and world famous Frosé, the Co-Op is a must! Enjoy a healthy and light breakfast while beating the southern heat with one of their many different options of flavored Frosé.

Plus, that's what A/C is for. Now, I'm not saying the South only has one season. Back in January 2018, we got 5 inches of snow! It may be rare, but it happens! Speaking of our climate, that brings us to number three.

Keep those golf clubs out of the garage and book your tee time all year round. There are over 20 golf courses in Charleston to choose from. And forget about winterizing your boat, keep your boat in the water and ready for a ride anytime. We've been known to have some 80 degree days in December.

4. Charleston's History

We are a harbor town with a rich history, just like our sister cities to the North. You will find so many similarities to Boston and Alexandria, Virginia. You will never run out of museums and tours bringing our history to life.

5. Food

With a mix of classic Southern fare to multiple James Beard Award nominated and winning chefs whipping up the most unique and memorable dishes, our food scene is my favorite part of the city. FIG, Monza, Nico, Husk, Obstinate Daughter, and Halls are just a few of my go-to's.

6. Festivals

Because we love our food and supporting local businesses, you will never run out of events like annual oyster roasts, weekly farmer's markets, food and wine festivals, the Southeastern Wildlife Expo, celebrating our arts and music with the Spoleto Festival, and we even have our own fashion week.

7. Hospitality

For Northern transplants, the hospitality is the first thing most in love with in Charleston. As Charleston has grown over the years, becoming a wonderfully diverse community, it still stands as a welcoming and hospitable city that is equally as great a place to live as it is to vacation.

8. Be A Tourist In Your Own Town

There are many reasons why Mount Pleasant is so popular with locals and visitors. Between the beautiful beaches of Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island, and the specialty shops and unique restaurants, there is one place in particular that stands out from the rest and leaves a lasting mark on those who visit. Shem Creek is a hopping stretch of lively restaurants and bars, many overlooking the water with sunset views over Charleston. Flowing through the heart of Mount Pleasant, Shem Creek is one of the most visited and popular places in Charleston. Although it is known for its many waterfront bars and restaurants, you will also find that Shem Creek offers a variety of activities including paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing, and boating.

The creek begins near present-day Bowman Road, where several small tributaries meet to form its head, and continues to wind through Mount Pleasant’s Old Village before eventually emptying into the Charleston Harbor. Shem Creek has a long history as a working creek, beginning in the 1740s. Several notable businessmen, established successful ferries on the creek during this time. Although ferries have since given way to bridges and charter boats, Shem Creek remains one of the most popular channels in the area.

“The Creek,” as locals like to call it, is the place where tourists and locals alike go to enjoy everything the low country has to offer. Visits from dolphins and wildlife delight paddlers and diners eating dockside, while vistas of the local marshes and the Ravenel Bridge complete the spectacular scenery.

Exploring the History & Future of Charleston's Iconic City Market

A Trip to Charleston isn’t complete without exploring the historic Charleston City Market. Join us as we delve into the history, changes and future of one of Charleston’s most notable places.

Established in the 1790s in its current location, the Charleston City Market stretches four city blocks and covers 1,240 feet through a series of continuous open air sheds culminating in the Great Hall. The market runs east to west from Meeting Street to East Bay Street, and is flanked by North Market and South Market Streets. This complex has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has also been designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Initially referred to as the Centre Market, the City Market was built as a replacement for Charleston’s Beef Market building which sat on the site of Charleston’s City Hall at 100 Broad Street. In the early 1840s, Charleston architect Edward B. White designed Market Hall. Throughout the 19th century, the City Market served as a gathering place for farmers and plantations to sell beef and produce, as well as a place for locals to meet and socialize.

The City Market has faced its share of challenges, including earthquakes, fires, storms and flooding. On September 29, 1938, several tornadoes wreaked havoc on Charleston, resulting in 32 lives lost, 100 people injured, and $2 million in property damage. One of the tornadoes caused substantial damage to the City Market. In 1989, Hurricane Hugo destroyed much of the Lowcountry, including extensive damage to the market and surrounding areas. While we have been fortunate to not see such drastic damage in recent years, the market experiences regular flooding whenever a big rain storms hits, especially if it coincides with high tide. It is a way of life for the vendors of this beautiful Charleston landmark to pack up their items and wade through the water to higher ground.

A $5.5 Million makeover of the market begin in 2010, and on June 27, 2011, the refurbished market reopened to the public. The piece de resistance is the Great Hall. Unlike the three open air sheds, the Great Hall is an enclosed and air-conditioned portion of the market that houses 20 vendors. This section of the market is often a welcomed refuge for tourists who are overcome by the humidity and heat of the Lowcounty, especially in the warm weather months – which run from March to November-ish.

Today, the market houses 300 artisans, vendors, and craftspeople selling Charleston souvenirs and collectibles. It is open every day of the year, except for Christmas. The day market and night market offer a variety of vendors, so be sure to check out both. There is something for everyone, from Charleston rice bead jewelry to benne wafers to hand painted souvenirs to the Gullah sweet grass baskets. If you’re planning a visit, allow several hours to take in the sights, smells and sounds of this cultural center in our beautiful city.

Having moved here close to 9 years ago with a 2 year old, I quickly learned that Charleston and our surrounding areas have some awesome kids activities!

1. Children's Museum

One of my favorite places I took my daughter when she was younger was the Children's Museum in downtown Charleston. There are 8 different interactive play areas, each with it’s own activities! Who didn’t love to scan items in the grocery store when they were little? Well, the Children's Museum will allow your kids to shop, scan and bag produce, boxed goods and even frozen foods!

When you’re done shopping, you can climb aboard the pirate ship and step back in time to the golden age of pirates! From sea monster attacks to searching for buried treasure to battles at sea… see where your child’s imagination will take them!

Next, hop on over to the art room where color and creativity welcome you! Whether your little one constructs knight’s armor from recycled egg cartons in the “Creation Station” or tries a splatter painting à la Jackson Pollock in the “Painting Place” – every child will find the artist within!

Other special areas include the Speak Loud Studio, Kids Garden, Air Air Everywhere and they even have an infant and toddler play space. Some of their installations change from time to time so be sure to check out the Children's Museum again and again!

2. Splash Zone Waterpark

Next on our list is Splash Zone Waterpark on James Island. When the temperature starts rising, people of all ages enjoy this favorite summertime getaway located in James Island County Park. This seasonal attraction provides hours of fun and recreation for the entire family.

It features a 200-foot tube slide, a 200-foot open slide, a rainforest play structure with slides, buckets, sprays, and more, a 500-foot lazy river with an adventure channel of sprays and waterwalls, a leisure pool, concessions, showers/changing areas, locker rentals, lounge chairs and group/party packages. So if you’d like to wear out your little one while beating the heat, be sure to check out Splash Zone Waterpark!

3. Charleston Fun Park

Third to make our list, and one of my personal favorites is Charleston Fun Park located in north Mt. Pleasant. Get your fun on with go-karts, 36 holes of mini-golf, an outdoor axe throwing arena, a virtual reality roller coaster, bumper cars, a full arcade with prizes and the all new OMNI VR Battle Arena!

And if all that makes you hungry or thirsty, they have snacks like Dippin’ Dots, F’Real Milkshakes, chips and drinks - including adult beverages like beer and wine. And speaking of beer and wine, every Thursday you can be treated to Live music and a rotating line-up of the areas most sought after food trucks (including some sweets trucks!), incredible drink specials and an axe throwing competition with prizes. Sounds like a great Thursday evening for me and the kids!

4. South Carolina Aquarium

Another great place to beat the summer heat is our very own South Carolina Aquarium, which is home to over 5,000 animals and is located in downtown Charleston! There are so many different exhibits from the mountains to the ocean. Check out their touch tank where you can actually touch and feel several species of invertebrates, like hermit crabs, whelk, sea urchins, horseshoe crabs and Atlantic stingrays!

Then head on over to the ocean exhibit and explore North America’s deepest tank! It’s impossible to miss their two-story, 385,000-gallon great ocean tank. You’ll practically rub noses with sharks and can wave hello to the 220-pound loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta.

Then go on to meet Liberty the bald eagle. Below her is a stream filled with many species of fish. Above is a waterfall spilling over a rocky gorge. Somewhere in the middle, you can even find 3 of the cutest river otters you have ever seen, Ace, Charlie and Beau, swimming, snacking or snoozing. There is so much more to see here so definitely add the Charleston South Carolina Aquarium to your list of must-sees!

5. Sporting Events

Last on our list are the sporting events. Head on over to Joe Riley Stadium -known to locals as “The Joe”- to take in a baseball game and cheer on our hometeam, the Riverdogs! This is actually a feeder team for the New York Yankees, so you might just get a chance to see the next Derek Jeter! And after every Friday evening games they have fireworks to end the night. It’s not a huge stadium so there’s not a bad seat in the house.

We are also home to the awesome minor league hockey team, the Charleston Stingrays! Their home turf is right here at the North Charleston Coliseum. For the younger fans, I would recommend joining the Cool Ray's Kids Club which is an exciting way for fans 14 and under to enjoy Stingrays hockey with a more exclusive experience. Members will have exclusive benefits, rewards, discounts and more! If you’re a hockey fan like me, it’s also a great place to get on the glass at a fraction of the price you’d pay at any NHL game!

The History Behind the Cobblestone Streets of Charleston

You're driving in Downtown Charleston and all of a sudden your car begins to violently shake as if you haven’t had an alignment in 15 years. Chances are your alignment is fine, you must have just found your way onto one of Charleston’s cobblestone roads. The roads that help keep local mechanic shops in business and will flatten your LaCroix in less than 10 seconds!

Charleston’s beautiful cobblestone roads offer the opportunity to take a step back in time as you explore these historic streets. Although filled with history, there are sadly just a few cobblestone streets left here in the Holy City.

Today we’re going to take a look at the history of Charleston’s cobblestone streets and which ones still remain today if you want to take a stroll.

The History

In the 17th and 18th centuries, England wanted to utilize the resources and trade goods of the Lowcountry. Ships would sail across the Atlantic Ocean to the ports of Charleston, and the cobblestone streets were a “side effect.”

The stones you walk on were actually used as weights by the ships coming overseas to make them denser and drop them further in the water to make them less susceptible to rough conditions. Once the ships arrived here in Charleston to load up their goods, they had no room for the stones and tossed them overboard.

The tide pushed the stones into the wharf and, after a while, colonists now had a means to make a road! At the time the streets were nothing more than dirt lined paths so the thought of smoothing out the stones to create a road seemed like a huge upgrade.

The old ballast stones have added character to the streets of Charleston and a great contribution to the history of the city. But as you may have noticed, there are very few of those streets remaining these days. Why is that? The simplest answer is progress.

While cobblestone streets were an upgrade from the dirt roads they previously walked on, Charleston’s residents wanted something that wouldn't make them spill their groceries or sprain their ankle every time they walked down the street. So, despite their allure and aesthetics, the cobblestones were removed in many streets and replaced with smoother surfaces.

Chalmers Street is one of the most photographed streets in South Carolina. It's located in the French Quarter and is said to have been so bumpy that it led to a woman going into labor. Take note of the Bermuda stone used in the construction of the older buildings, primarily the Pink House on Chalmers Street. This stone was also brought on the ships to the docks.
Adger’s Wharf is South of Broad and runs straight to the water. Its current name comes from James Adger II who had a shop on the street and became one of the richest men in the country. The street was once lined with shops and was an integral cog in the shipping industry.
Gillon Street was named after Commodore Alexander Gillon and is at the foot of Broad Street. This street was one of the first cobblestone streets in the area.
Longitude Lane sits off of East Bay. The area was first built up in the 1690s through 1720s. The alleys still have cobblestone streets and offer a beautiful walk, with stone walls and beautiful homes.
Philadelphia Alley was host to many of the cities duels back in the 17-1800's and is rumored to be haunted by the souls that lost their lives on those very stones.

Downtown Charleston has a rich history and is home to many unique neighborhoods. Each neighborhood has their own distinct charm and character attracting all walks of life. Today we're highlighting 5 of these historic downtown Charleston neighborhoods.

1. South of Broad

Let’s start at the tip of the Peninsula with South of Broad. This iconic residential neighborhood is filled with cobblestone streets, stately antebellum homes, and historical monuments. Rainbow row and The Battery are just two of the many locations that highlight this famed neighborhood.

2. Harleston Village

The second neighborhood on the list is Harleston Village. This neighborhood is bordered by Broad Street, the Charleston harbor, The Medical University of South Carolina, and College of Charleston. Established in the 1700's, Harleston Village contains Georgian and Italiante buildings built on tree lined streets. This charming area is the home of Colonial Lake, where you will find joggers and cyclers enjoying the picturesque neighborhood.

5. The Boroughs

Last, but definitely not least, is The Boroughs. It’s made up of four small neighborhoods: Radcliffeborough, Ansonborough, Cannonborough Elliotborough, and Wraggborough. Each neighborhood brings their own attributes and personalities. One can get lost in a number of activities such as spending the day at the aquarium or attending one of the many events at Marion Square, the Charleston Music Hall or the Charleston Gaillard Center.

One of the best parts of living in the Lowcountry is our beautiful waterways and natural surroundings. The Charleston County parks and recreation commission maintains 19 public boat landings in our beautiful city. Wondering where to launch your boat? Here's a list of 10 public boat landings that get you out on the water.

1. Remley's Point Public Boat Landing | Mount Pleasant
Beginning in Mount Pleasant, the Remley's Point landing is a great spot to enjoy views of downtown and the Ravenel Bridge, with easy access to the Charleston Harbor and a short trip to the jetties. This location is a popular place for boat lovers. If you've never been there before, it might be a little difficult to find at first, but it's well worth it once you do.

2. Shem Creek | Mount Pleasant
With a nice boat ramp and easy access to the Harbor, Sullivan's Island and Fort Sumter, the Shem Creek landing is a great option for those East of the Cooper. Paddlers also enjoy the spot for its easy access into Shem Creek. And don't forget to catch one of the spectacular sunsets here before you go.

3. W.O. Thomas Jr. Boat Landing | North Charleston
Taking views of the Ashley river from this location. Enjoy the covered picnic area or throw out a line. This landing offers three ramps and good parking for you to enjoy your day.

4. Wappoo Cut Boat Ramp | West Ashley
The appropriately named Wappoo Cut landing provides quick access to the Harbor, Ashley River, and as part of the Intracoastal waterway, with four boat ramps, it's a popular destination for boaters. Currents can be Swift here though so be cautious with launching and coming in. This landing also offers several picnic benches to take in the sights and sounds.

5. Riverland Terrace Landing | James Island
Just around the cut from the Wappoo landing, you can find the Riverland Terrace public boat landing, or as some locals refer to it, the Fire Station landing. Taking great views from the picnic benches and child's play area and enjoy exceptional sunsets throughout the Wappoo Cut, but be aware of the current, which can be Swift going through the cut.

6. Sol Legare Public Boat Landing | James Island
With a good amount of parking and room for multiple boaters to be launching simultaneously, Sol Legare landing is a great place to check out. Recent improvements to this landing include a new fishing and crabbing pier and a new floating dock, as well as some improvements to the parking lot.

7. Folly River Boat Ramp | Folly Beach
The beach traffic may make it a challenge to get out here, but the Folly River boat ramp is worth it once you arrive. After you've enjoyed some time on the water, it's a very short driver walk to center street on Folly to enjoy the restaurants and bars.

8. Pierpont Boat Landing | West Ashley

A great place to launch a kayak, canoe or paddleboard. The Pierpont boat landing is located in the middle of West Ashley, but due to a variety of constraints, launching a standard sized boat from here is not ideal.

9. Limehouse Landing | John's Island

This landing is located right off the main road next to the Limehouse bridge that connects Johns Island and West Ashley. It's convenient location allows boaters to quickly access the Intracoastal waterway as well as Wolf Island or the nearby sandbar, popular spots for boaters to gather.

10. Cherry Point Landing | Wadmalaw Island

Cherry Point might be a bit off the beaten path, but it's proximity to Quaint, Rockville and access to the waterway with good parking makes it a favorite of many. Annually, during the Rockville Regatta, the landing sees a huge increase in traffic. The rest of the time, it's a great place to throw in a fishing line or launch your vessel.

As with most places, these public boat landings can get very busy, especially on weekends and holidays. So plan ahead and be prepared and to protect our beautiful waterways, please make sure to take all of your trash with you. In the end, we are all fortunate to have access to the beautiful Lowcountry waterways at these public boat landings.

Where Are The Best Places to Watch a Charleston Sunrise?

All right early birds, get ready to set those alarms and get that coffee brewing. I am taking you down the list of the five best places to watch the sunrise in Charleston.

#5 The Copahee Sound

The Copahee Sound is an area in Northern Mount Pleasant that makes up a large part of the intercoastal waterway. Take a right off of Highway 17 on Gadsdenville Road and you will find yourself at a beautiful vantage point for sunrise. You can sit up on the point or walk the back rural road along the sound and take in the expansive marsh view teaming with wildlife. Take a deep breath and smell the salt air and the pluff mud. For those of you new to the area, pluff mud is an acquired aroma. You'll love it eventually.

After the big ball of fire rises in the sky, I recommend heading north to Awendaw for a sausage biscuit at the famous Sewee Outpost. This gas station / general store is a favorite amongst locals. #4 Folly Beach

The edge of America is an amazing spot to take in the day's first rays. Take a stroll along the beach or walk to the end of the pier. This Eastern most tip of South Carolina does not disappoint. You can breathe in the ocean air and watch the local surfers hitting their favorite breaks as the sun makes its way above the horizon. Pro tip, once you've had your fill of sunrise, go refill your coffee at Burt's Market.

#3 The Battery and White Point Gardens

This historical landmark seawall provides panoramic views of the Ravenel Bridge, Sullivan's Island and historical Fort Sumter. An area that's normally hustling and bustling with a mixture of locals and tourists is filled with peace and quiet during this time. Once the sun has risen, I recommend taking a walk through the historic side streets amongst the historic homes and mansions.

#2 The Ravenel Bridge

Put on your running shoes and workout clothes, you're going to work for this view. The Ravenel Bridge is a famous cable stayed bridge that expands 2.71 miles over the Cooper River. This beautiful man made marvel connects downtown Charleston to Mount Pleasant. The best view is at the bridge's highest point.

Once you catch your breath, you can take into 360 degree view of the low country. You can see Patriot's Point Marina, the Charleston Harbor and the gorgeous peninsula skyline as the sun begins to bathe the church steeples with sunlight. Depending on which way you're heading, I recommend grabbing an acai bowl from Tres Palmas on the Mount Pleasant side. If you're heading back downtown, I recommend Huriyali for a healthy breakfast or the Harbinger Cafe and bakery to help replenish those calories you burn conquering the bridge.

#1 Isle of Palms and Breach Inlet

Pack up your canines, kayaks and coffee cups, we are heading to a dawn patrollers paradise. Nestled between Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms, Breach Inlet provides an amazing opportunity to dolphin watch, stroll along the water's edge, cast a line into the surf and unleash your pooch.

Isle of Palms allows your dog to be off leash during the sunrise hours from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in the peak spring and summer months. There is no better place to watch the sun break the horizon.

Once the sun is up and you've shaken the sand off your feet, head on over to two of my favorite breakfast spots. Café Paname is a hidden local favorite that is owned and operated by a classically trained French baker. Can you say chocolate croissant?

And another option, although I recommend both, would be The Co-Op for a dose of fun and funky flair offering options from their deli to get you prepared for your day with all day frosé.

Exploring Pitt Street in Mt. Pleasant, SC

Want to get away from the hustle and bustle of downtown? Then head on over to Mount Pleasant and plan an afternoon around Pitt Street.

First, plan to stop in at Pitt Street Pharmacy for a good old fashioned soda, where kids and teens have carved their names into the old black soda fountain counter for years. Keep an eye out, you may catch a glimpse of the cast from the hit Netflix show Outer Banks. Several of the scenes were shot, right here, on Pitt Street.

Next, take a walk or bike ride down Pitt Street to see some of the most amazing homes in the historic Old Village. End your sightseeing adventure at the famous Pitt Street Bridge. I may be biased, but some of the most stunning sunsets over the Charleston Harbor and skyline take place at the historic Pitt Street Bridge.

Originally called the Cove Inlet Bridge, or Gadsden's Bridge, it was the first bridge that connected the mainland and Sullivan's Island. It was built back in 1778 during the Revolutionary War under the supervision of one of Charleston's great patriots, Christopher Gadsden, who also designed the iconic "Don't Tread on Me" flag. The bridge was designed to support William Moultrie's troops, horses, and cannons to access Fort Sullivan, later gaining its title as Fort Moultrie. Fast forward to 1804, and only the supports remain.

For the majority of the 19th century, the only way to access Sullivan's Island was by boat. However, some mighty businessmen came to the rescue in 1897. These entrepreneurs purchased the neighboring island just north of Sullivan's, called Long Island, for a whopping $50,000. They formed a plan to transfer Long Island into one of the most popular resorts, similar to New York's Coney Island. They then decided on a new exotic name, Isle of Palms.

One big problem stood in the way: how would they provide access to the island?

Established was a dedicated ferry boat service between Charleston and Mount Pleasant, and one of the most modern inventions of that time, an electric railway. Come 1923, the wooden bridge was widened to allow room for automobiles. Five years later, the trolley was no longer needed and the bridge was dedicated only as a vehicular bridge, earning its name: Pitt Street Bridge.

By 1936, the bridge was no longer safe or functional. This is when Pitt Street Bridge's big brother, Ben Sawyer Bridge, was decided upon. We then said goodbye to the Pitt Street Bridge over Cove Inlet, as it was dismantled. Today remains the old bridge supports, which are still standing with a wooden walkway and a pier that’s coveted by fisherman, children, romantics, locals and tourists.

Take a stroll through the park and down the remainder of the bridge to catch not only a refreshing breath of salty air, but also unbeatable views of the marsh, wildlife, Charleston Harbor and, my favorite, a picture perfect sunset.

End the night by heading over to Post House Inn. Built in 1896, the inn features a highly sought out downstairs restaurant and seven bedrooms on the second floor for the perfect history-filled romantic getaway. The inn has just recently been completely renovated, but still holds every ounce of charm.

Old Village

The most sought-after neighborhood is Old Village, the oldest waterfront neighborhood in Mount Pleasant. Many of the homes in Old Village date back to the 1700s and 1800s like the Hibben House and neighboring waterfront estates which feature unobstructed water views as far as the eye can see. From your own backyard you can catch glimpses of the downtown skyline and Fort Sumter. In other areas of this neighborhood, like Old Village landing, you get to enjoy the stunning sunsets overlooking Sullivan's

Island.

This well-established community is loved by locals who enjoy the preserved traditional Southern charm feel with the mossy oak trees, spacious parks at Alhambra Hall, and Pitt Street Bridge overlooking

Charleston Harbor and Shem Creek. The most notable landmarks in Old Village are on Pitt Street. You may also catch a few glimpses of these landmarks on the Netflix series Outer Banks , such as the famous Pitt Street Pharmacy, where you can grab an old-fashioned fountain soda and the newly renovated Post House Coastal Tavern and Post House Inn with seven cozy rooms with nostalgic vintage feel of this historical building living in old villages has it all.

Cooper Estates

Next up is Cooper Estates, right across the street from the lively shem creek restaurants. This well-established historic neighborhood is known for large homes on large waterfront lots. If you happen to find a home that's not on the water you still have access to the community boat landing and dock right on Shem Creek, or hop on over to Shem Creek Marina where you can have the conveniences of dry dock storage. Boat enthusiasts will definitely love this neighborhood!

Bayview Acres

Another one of the original Mount Pleasant neighborhoods is Bayview acres. Want to go for a run over the Ravenel Bridge or maybe golf at Patriots Point Links? This community is walking distance to both! It is also walkable to Shem Creek, TraderJoe's, and coffee shops. A majority of the homes on Bayview Drive offer deep water or tidal creek property but all residents have a neighborhood boat ramp as well as a play park and tennis courts.

Make a list of services you need to terminate in your old town and services you need to initiate in your new town.

Remember to transfer mail subscriptions for things like magazines, food deliveries, and mail-order prescriptions.

1. Orange Spot Coffee
Over in Park Circle in North Charleston, this place is super welcoming, really comfortable and, of course, they serve great coffee. If you're hungry, they also have an awesome selection of breakfast options. More notably, their sandwiches really can compete with some of the best kitchens in town.

2. The Skinny Dip
This is one of the coolest concepts that we've ever seen! Downstairs, you can

shop there selection of local designer brands, but upstairs has everything you could possibly look for in a great coffee shop. They have a 20-foot coffee and wine bar and an amazing outdoor patio with plenty of space if you want to actually get some work done. You can even rent it out for events and parties!

3. Vintage Coffee Cafe
This is one of the most talked-about coffee shops in town. This charming Mount Pleasant home was converted into a cafe that now serves amazing coffee. They have a great food menu and a super cool backyard outdoor area where you can drink your coffee while the kids can play.

4. Black Magic Cafe
Located on James Island and in West Ashley, this coffee shop is also the home to some amazing breakfast and lunch meals. NOTE: Although their Folly Beach location recently closed as of 2020, Black Magic is still a local favorite.

1. Sesame

With three locations in the Charleston area, Sesame delivers top-notch ingredients, creative options, weekly specials and you can even build your own burger. For the gluten-free crowd, they even have a burger in a bowl.

2. The Brick

Located smack dab in the middle of downtown, The Brick is the perfect place to watch the game, grab a beer, and of course, get your burger fix! Check out the Hokey Burger which features their house-made root beer barbecue sauce. If also you like your french fries seasoned, The Brick is definitely the spot for you.

3. Coleman Public House

Coleman Public House is one of our favorite places to grab a burger. The vibe is really comfortable, they have a great beer selection, and their food is on point. Our favorite there is the California Burger with smoked bacon, avocado, alfalfa sprouts–plus the Truffle and Parmesan fries are seriously no joke.

If you're out on Sullivan's Island, you need to go check out Poe's Tavern. 5. Little Jack's Tavern

Since opening in 2016, Little Jack's Tavern has been recognized by both Southern Living and Bon Appetit. The staple there is the Tavern Burger. Its simple and can be ordered as a single or a double. Best of all, it tastes like a true American classic.

The waterway leads to some remote barrier islands such as Capers Island and Dewees for camping or just enjoying the sun with friends and family.
