8 Reasons to Move From The Northeast to The Southeast
Do you like warm weather, sunny skies, access to multiple beaches, and feeling like you're on vacation every single day? Charleston may be the place for you. Today we're going to talk about eight reasons to move to Charleston from up North.
1. Taxes
This is where we're going to have to pick your jaw up off the floor. South Carolina has one of the lowest property tax rates in the country. What does that mean for you? More for your money. On average, a home between $300,000 and $500,000 is about $1,900 annually. Up North, the same house would be about $6,000 annually. Seriously, go check your tax bill.
2. Weather
Throw out all those socks, you're living the open toe life now. Yes, we do have brutally hot and humid summers, but on the plus side, you get to enjoy the beaches all year round. Plus, that's what A/C is for. Now, I'm not saying the South only has one season. Back in January 2018, we got 5 inches of snow! It may be rare, but it happens! Speaking of our climate, that brings us to number three.
3. Year-Round Recreation & Outdoor Activities
Keep those golf clubs out of the garage and book your tee time all year round. There are over 20 golf courses in Charleston to choose from. And forget about winterizing your boat, keep your boat in the water and ready for a ride anytime. We've been known to have some 80 degree days in December.
4. Charleston's History
We are a harbor town with a rich history, just like our sister cities to the North. You will find so many similarities to Boston and Alexandria, Virginia. You will never run out of museums and tours bringing our history to life.
5. Food
With a mix of classic Southern fare to multiple James Beard Award nominated and winning chefs whipping up the most unique and memorable dishes, our food scene is my favorite part of the city. FIG, Monza, Nico, Husk, Obstinate Daughter, and Halls are just a few of my go-to's.
6. Festivals
Because we love our food and supporting local businesses, you will never run out of events like annual oyster roasts, weekly farmer's markets, food and wine festivals, the Southeastern Wildlife Expo, celebrating our arts and music with the Spoleto Festival, and we even have our own fashion week.
7. Hospitality
For Northern transplants, the hospitality is the first thing most in love with in Charleston. As Charleston has grown over the years, becoming a wonderfully diverse community, it still stands as a welcoming and hospitable city that is equally as great a place to live as it is to vacation.
8. Be A Tourist In Your Own Town
With many parks, plantations, notable restaurants, historical landmarks, and beaches, you will never be bored. Don't feel like walking on the cobblestone streets? No problem. Grab a Holy Spokes bike or a rickshaw or even a horse-drawn carriage.
Let us know what your favorite thing about Charleston is and what would be your number one reason for relocating here!
