Exploring Shem Creek | Boats, Bars & Restaurants in Mount Pleasant, SC

Sep 09, 2021

There are many reasons why Mount Pleasant is so popular with locals and visitors. Between the beautiful beaches of Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island, and the specialty shops and unique restaurants, there is one place in particular that stands out from the rest and leaves a lasting mark on those who visit. Follow along with me as we explore the beautiful Shem Creek!

Shem Creek is a hopping stretch of lively restaurants and bars, many overlooking the water with sunset views over Charleston. Flowing through the heart of Mount Pleasant, Shem Creek is one of the most visited and popular places in Charleston. Although it is known for its many waterfront bars and restaurants, you will also find that Shem Creek offers a variety of activities including paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing, and boating.

The creek begins near present-day Bowman Road, where several small tributaries meet to form its head, and continues to wind through Mount Pleasant’s Old Village before eventually emptying into the Charleston Harbor. Shem Creek has a long history as a working creek, beginning in the 1740s.  Several notable businessmen, established successful ferries on the creek during this time. Although ferries have since given way to bridges and charter boats, Shem Creek remains one of the most popular channels in the area.

“The Creek,” as locals like to call it, is the place where tourists and locals alike go to enjoy everything the low country has to offer. Visits from dolphins and wildlife delight paddlers and diners eating dockside, while vistas of the local marshes and the Ravenel Bridge complete the spectacular scenery.

Along with some of the best bars and restaurants in town, Shem Creek has its own 10-foot-wide boardwalk that allows visitors to see the sights in and around the creek as well as Fort Sumter and the Charleston skyline. Grab a Charleston brewed craft beer or hand dipped ice cream and enjoy strolling the creek before hitting the restaurants and bars. And best of all, Shem Creek Boardwalk is the perfect place to take in a romantic Charleston sunset.

One of the most popular activities Shem Creek has to offer is Boating. Hop aboard one of the fishing charters and reel in your next trophy fish, take a catamaran cruise around the harbor, or set sail from the comfort of your own private yacht. Whether you’re idling through the main strip or breezing through the channel, you’re bound to have a fun day out on the water.

Shem creek can benefit the business traveler, the couple wanting a fun date night, or even the group of friends searching for the best spot in town to have a fun night out over a round of drinks.

If you’re the business traveler, you can make use of the amazing dockside restaurants to host clients, meetings, or even relax from a long week filled with travel and meetings.

If it's a time for celebration, head over to the tavern and table. The dining experience is perfect for whatever the occasion calls for. Professional enough to host those you care to impress and flexible enough to kick back and relax.

It may depend on how your week has been, but If it was a rough week and a cocktail is the first thing on your mind, head over to Saltwater Cowboys. Mingle with locals on their waterfront deck while listening to live music and enjoy one (or a few, no judgement here) of their many famous cocktails. Trust us, they have quite a few to choose from!

No matter what kind of experience you are looking for, Shem Creek has a something for everyone!
